Peggy and Steve continued to dance together, enjoying each other's long overdue company.
"Peggy, I want to show you around New York. It's so different, but still has a lot of things that are the same. Like Coney Island." Steve spoke.
Peggy gave a weak smile. "It sounds wonderful."
Then, Peggy's grin faltered.
'Oh, how Angie would love to have seen all of this.' Angie. Just thinking of her friend sent a fresh wave of pain through her, knowing that she'd never see them again. Steve noticed her smile vanish, and held her hand.
"I know it's an adjustment, so maybe we should take a tour of the city later." He said softly, sympathetic to her situation.
Peggy nodded, unable to speak.
"Besides, Peg, there are some people I would like you to meet." He said.
Peggy was, although sad and confused, also intrigued. Who had she not met yet? Steve walked with her down an endless hallway, and stopped when they reached a large common room. Peggy noticed that there were children, ten children, that couldn't be older than sixteen in the room.
"Peggy, I would like to introduce you to the New Avengers." Steve announced proudly.
The kids looked at her, faces ranging from expressions of 'who is she?' To 'why is she here?' To 'I know who you are, how are you here?' Peggy's back straightened at all the eyes on her. A dark skinned girl walked up towards her.
"So, you're the Peggy Carter I've heard so much about?" She asked.
Peggy nodded.
"Okay, I guess we need to introduce ourselves. I'm Hazel, I'm thirteen I can turn into any animal I want, and I'm working on turning into other people." She grinned. One by one, the other four girls and five boys introduced themselves to her. A Caribbean girl who was fourteen named Thalia could control electricity and fly, a thirteen year old Cherokee girl named Piper could move things with her mind and could convince people to do things she wanted them to, a thirteen year old white girl named Annabeth could turn into a solid diamond and send out painful mind-shocks, and a fifteen year old Puerto Rican girl named Reyna could turn herself and others invisible.
Peggy didn't know what to make of them. Their abilities seemed impossible. Then, the guys introduced themselves. Percy, a Hawaiian boy was thirteen and could manipulate water, Leo, a Hispanic boy was twelve and could control fire, Nico was twelve and Italian, and could control earth, Jason was fair skinned and could manipulate wind, age fourteen, and Frank, a fifteen year old Chinese boy could run as fast as the speed of sound. Steve explained who they were. They were the future, orphans adopted by the Avengers that would be the next superheroes. Steve smiled at her.
"They are quite something, aren't they Peggy?"
They were, and Peggy despite herself, felt a surge of affection for these kids.
"C'mon Peg, I want to show you the city now." Steve said, a bit impatiently. Peggy smiled. More alone time with Steve? She could enjoy that.
