Chapter 3

"Mom?" She called out and ran into the next room. Having an uneasy feeling, Felix ran behind her with his gun out. When he entered the next room the sight shocked him. Emma was crouched down on the ground, in tears. She hovered over her mothers still body. "Mom..." She whimpered, sorrow laced her words as she cried into her mothers shirt. Her mothers neck was covered in blood.

"I-I'm sorry..." Felix stuttered, putting a hand on the girls shoulder. There was a long silence. "You can still come with me if you'd like." He's voice was saddened and awkward.

Emma looked back at him with teary eyes. A sudden erg for comfort caused her to jump up and wrap Felix in a hug. At first he was surprised, but he soon realized her sadness and wrapped his arm around her.

"Thank you." She whispered into his chest, her grey eyes looking up into his blue eyes. At that moment they both felt a bound between them.

"This place isn't safe. We need to leave soon." Felix told Emma, pulling her back to look at her. "Go get anything you need, then we have to leave." Emma nodded, her eyes red and watery, and went into her room. When he heard the door close he looked down at the body and sighed. He didn't want Emma to have to see this when she came out. Felix pulled a cover off of the couch beside him and layed it over the body. "Better then nothing." He muttered as he looked over the covered body.

Emma sat in her room, unsure of leaving. Her emotions were overwhelming. She was still crying. The tears wouldn't stop coming. Emma was good at holding back her emotions and bottling them up until it was appropriate to let them out, so that's what she decided to do. She sucked up her emotions and put them away. Then the logical thinking kicked in. She had to leave. If she wanted to live, she had to go. Leave her mother. Her mother was gone. Nothing could be done now. She had to leave, right? Right. With that she pushed herself up from the perfectly made bed and grabbed some important things such as:

cellphone, phone charger, lighter she had only gotten for the Nirvana logo on the front and back, hair spray (think about that one), skull design duck tape, and a change of clothes.

She still had room for other things that they might find, like food or weapons. Great. Before she left her room she grabbed her headphones and a beautiful necklace and stuffed them in her pocket. Before Emma could open the door a familiar girly scream bursted from the living room. She ran into the room, tightly gripping her pipe. She looked into see her mother standing in front of Pewds, her arms spread out, and her mouth spilling out blood. "Mom!?" She shouted. Her mother didn't look. At that moment she ran up to Felix, grabbed his arm, and ran to the front door. Emma pulled on the door, locked. She fumbled trying to turn the lock as Felix stood behind her. Repeatedly yelling "Hurry up!" As what was once her loving mom came closer with arms stretched and jaws open. Emma pushed open the door. When Felix got out she quickly slammed the door behind her. Once again Emma had to suck up her emotions into a bottle.

"I know-" Felix began.

"Let's go, it's getting dark." She interrupted, not wanting a petty speech. Understanding, Felix nodded his head and started to walk down the hallway with a tight grip on his gun. Emma did the same with her pipe, following close behind him.

They cautiously walked past each door. All the doors were shut but it wasn't worth being off guard. Emma's black sneakers scooted across the floor hitting clothes, jewelry, and other things left behind. This hallway was far more trashed then the one on the second floor. The sudden screeching of a fuzzed tv caused the two to jump to the other side of the hall. Hug the walls. The thought came into Pewds mind.

"Someone had to turn that on." Emma whispered to Felix.

He grabbed Emma's arm and darted to the end of the hall. What the hell was he doing? He gripped onto her black hoodie sleeve and pulled her into the stairwell.

"What the heck? What was that?" Emma asked as she followed Pewds down the stairs. He was taking two steps at a time so Emma did the same. The only thing stopping her from slipping was the rubber grips at the edge of each step. "Pewds!" She tried to get his attention. It didn't work, he still flew down the steps like a bat out of hell. At the bottom of the stairwell Emma grabbed Felix's sleeve. Her tight grip jerked Pewds back. He looked back at her, his face white as snow. "What's wrong?"

"I don't know...I just...just got this feeling to run." He didn't try to explain very well. He looked like he had seen a ghost. He tried to slow his breathing with some success.

"Warn me next time." She smiled. He looked like he needed to see a smile, so she put on a fake one. Felix slightly hinted a smile back to her, then turned to the metal door that lead into the lobby. He took a deep breath before slowly opening the door. Once he had a big enough crack, he peeked out. Besides the trash and luggage, it was pretty empty. No people or zombies in sight.

"Wait here until I get to the doors." Pewds instructed as he slipped out the door. Emma held the door open as she watched him walk to the other side. She looked all around, looking for any of those things that where deemed "zombies" by the Americans. They did look and act like the ones in video games and movies, but as she thought about it, she wondered how they could call them that. They at least WERE humans at one point. When she was about halfway through with her over thinking, Felix called for her just loud enough to get to her ears. Emma perked her head up and cautiously made her way to his side. They peeked out at the darkening sky. They knew they wouldn't make it to Marzia before nightfall but neither of them said a word. They walked out to the car and hopped in. Felix pulled out his phone and saw a text. His face lit up with hope. He unlocked his phone and read the message from Marzia.

"Where are you? Plz text me back.

I love you." He read over and over again.

"I'm on my way 2 get you. Just stay there and I'll get there ASAP." Felix texted back then started the car.

He took in a deep breath then took off. The drive was silent for awhile. After about fifteen minutes Pewds broke the silence.

"So what all do we have?" He asked as he quickly checked his phone for a text.

Emma pulled the backpack up on her lap and opened it up. "Umm a note book, markers, a map, an iPhone charger, my iPhone, some Slim Jim's, a bottle of water, duck tape, clothes, a lighter, and hairspray." Emma listed. "The pipe and axe are in the back."

"That's good. That should last us until we get to my house."

"Let's stop at that gas station." Emma pointed to the gas station to her right.

Pewds looked at the fuel monitor, seeing the hand nearing empty, he pulled in and up to a gas pump.
