Chapter 28
POV: Felix
I hopped out of my truck and walked up to the doors of the grocery store. The glass was shattered, blood covered the floors, and the decaying bodies if zombies laid dead. I saw Emma's pack on the ground, my face paling as I walked over to make sure it was hers. My stomach turned as I picked up the backpack. It had a splatter of fresh blood on the front of it. Nervous and scared, my breathing quickened and my eyes darted around the store.
"Emma! Ryan! George! Fianna!" I called out, marching down the empty entrance.
"Felix!" I heard Emma yell. I whipped over to my right to see Emma running towards me with a grin. George quickly followed, along with Fianna and Ryan.
"Hey, Emeo!" I said as she wrapped her arms around my waist.
"Where you been?" Ryan asked, wrapping an arm around my shoulder and patting my back.
"Wow! the better questions what happened to you guys." I said looking at the blood on everyone.
"Zombies." Fianna said, pointing at the dead zombies behind me.
"Oh my god!" I heard Emma say, as I was turning to look over the zombies.
I spun around and saw Emma holding Fianna's arm, examining the bite. Every one was in shock and speechless.
"W-we can fix it right?" George muttered, rushing over to his sister. There was only a silence. "...Sis, w-we can fix this. C-can't we?" He looked around the room at all of us for support.
"Yeah, Yeah. At the Swedish base. They could have something." I stated.
"No. I-I can't stay with you guys. I'm not putting you all at risk." Fianna said as a tear streamed down her cheek.
"Wait, wait! We don't even know what happens when someone gets bit. We can't just go off TV shows for life or death shit." Ryan quickly input the information.
"Yeah, Ryan's right. None of us have seen someone after they've been bit." Emma Backed him up.
I noticed that Fianna and George were looking at each other, like they new something. "None of us have, have we?" I felt bad implying.
"No! None of us have!" George shouted.
"George,...Don't lie to them..." Fianna sighed, hugging her little brother.
But... it-it wont happen to-" his voice cracked as a tear went down his face.", it can't happen to you!"
"Look, our parents...they died as...as..." She tried to say.
"Its okay...We understand." Ryan said as he put a hand on her shoulder.
"Okay, lets think this through.' I stated. "I have a car now. So, we can make it to the coast of Denmark in about four hours, at the very most. Then we find a boat and get over to Sweden, that will, ideally, take two hours. then to walk to the army base will be four hours, if all goes as planned. So,..." I started to count it up in my head. "about ten hours in all. How...umh...long did it...ya know...take...-"
"How long did it take for our parents to turn?" Fianna abruptly stated.
"Well, yeah..."
"About three days."
"Plenty of time to get to the base and get to the meds. I mean they created it. They'll have a cure." Ryan said, a pitiful smile across his face.
"Yeah. Lets get going." I said and headed to the doors. Everyone got their things and followed behind.
"You got an SUV!?" George said, excitement hinted in his voice.
"Yep straight from the Swedish army." I said as I hopped in the SUV and turned it on.
Everyone quickly piled in and smiles grew on everyone's faces as the warm air came from the vents. We all got situated in the car. Ryan was sitting beside me, Emma and George were in the second row of seats, and Fianna was in the very back row with all the supplies. She looked at me through the rear view mirror, noticing me examining her. Her eyes were filled with sadness and hatred. I quickly shifted the mirror and took off.
We were about an hour into the drive, Fianna and the kids were asleep and me and Ryan were talking.
"How much supplies do we have?" He asked in a low whisper.
"Enough to last us months. I even have the lay out of three bases and a map showing where all the bases are in Europe and enough gas to last this SUV a month." I said as I smiled.
"You made out good!...Speaking of that, how did you make it out of there?"
"You'd you believe me if I said I kicked all their asses?"
"Nope." he answered, laughing a bit.
"Yeah, me either." I laughed, trying to stay as quiet as I could.
"So what did you do?" Ryan asked, more serious.
"Well, I cleaned up so I wouldn't look out of place and I just snuck around putting stuff in this SUV until it was full, then I drove off with them shooting at me."
"I didn't know you had that in you."
I sighed, "Yeah, I didn't know I had a lot of stuff in me until all this happened..."
Ryan sighed as well, "I know what you mean man... So, you want me to take my turn driving?"
"Nah man, you haven't even slept yet. Get some sleep. I'll wake you up when I get tired."
With that, Ryan soon drifted off to sleep, leaning up against the window with an army green cover over him. I turned my attention to the road an stared ahead, the snow piling all around the roads. There was really nothing to look at. Zombies stood on the side of the road, slowly walking toward it and snow fell everywhere. And that's all I had to look at for another hour. That is until about three hours into the drive. I could see something that I think looked like a boat in the distance. Thankfully I looked back to the road and had to slam on the brakes, pushing everyone forward from their seats.
"What the heck!" I heard George from the back seat.
"What's going on?" Emma mumbled.
"Is everything okay?" Fianna asked.
Ryan just stared blankly ahead, looking at what I was looking at.
"I-is it alive?" He asked quietly.
"Everyone just stay in the car." I gulped, pulling out my gun as I opened the car door. I walked up to the neon orange cover, that was frosted with snow and shakily held my gun out.
The snow fell all around me making it hard to even see my hands in front of me. I prayed for the clouds to part, just to make it even a little easier to see. Taking in a deep breath I pulled back the orange cover and saw two small figures, covered in snow cuddled up together. I looked and focused my vision. It was a small dog and a little girl. I hesitated for a second, asking myself if they were alive. A cough from the girl answered my question. I scooped the poor things up in my arms and carried them to the car.
"Get me some blankets and water now!" I demanded as I jumped into the car with the girl and the dog on my lap. I was quickly past up three blankets and a warm bottle of water. I sat it in front of the heater to get it warmer and wrapped the tiny kid up in all three of the blankets. They both shivered and the dog was licking the girls face but she didn't show any sign of being awake.
"Was she in the road?!" Emma asked, leaning up in her seat to see the small girl that only looked to be five.
"Yeah..." We all sat in silence for a minute. "Here Ryan. Can you hold her while I drive?" I asked.
"Uh um Yeah, yeah, sure." he said, a bit hesitantly. I handed over the small kid and he held her close to him.
The vehicle was silent as I drove about four more miles. Thats when I saw the coast line and a big fairy boat.
"Finally!" I exclaimed. "This is what we've been waiting for!"
Cheers came from the back seats.
"Can we take the SUV with us?" George asked.
"Depends on the fairy." Ryan sighed, looking down at the little girl curled up in his lap. Her curly blond hair covered her face as the little black pug looked at her, like he was waiting for her to wake up.
"Daddy...?" The little girl finally spoke and her eyes slowly opened, looking up at Ryan. "Daddy..." She mumbled, putting her arms around him and cuddling into his chest. Ryan was completely in shock.
"Oh, no sweetie. I'm not your dad." I don't think she was paying attention to him, because she just kept hugging him.
"Where's Edgar?" She yawned. The small black pug jumped up in her face and started to lick her and bark. "Edgar!" she shrieked.
"What's your name?" Ryan asked.
"Lily." She laughed as the puppy licked her.
After getting over that cuteness, we had to question the poor kid. "So Lily, how did you end up all alone?" Ryan asked as I pulled the SUV onto the back of the fairy.
"Daddy went away some where and mommy and me were left at da car. When daddy didn't come back Mommy took me to find him but she went away in the snow and me and Edgar didn't know where to go...Where's Mommy and Daddy at?" She asked so innocently.
"Lets not worry about that right now, okay?" Ryan said.
"Okay..."
"Can you tell me about your puppy here?" He asked as I pulled onto the fairy.
"Hey Emma, want to go start up the boat with me?" I asked as I open the car door.
"Yeah, sure!" She said, hopping out of the car before I could.
