Chapter 4
Felix pulled into the gas station and up to a gas pump. He got out his phone and sent a text to both his parents and his sister pretty much saying get ready, hide. "Stay here." He said as he excited the car and put his phone away. He grabbed the pump and tested it before trying to fill his car. He held down the trigger of the pump. Nothing came out. "Shit." He muttered as he placed the pump back. He walk up to the drivers side of the car and pulled the door open. "I have to turn the pump on. Wait here. Don't get out of the car." Felix pushed the silver door shut and pulled out his gun, letting it hang to his side.
Emma watched as he walked to the glass door, looking all around for zombies. Every car alarm, breaking of glass, and scream alerting him.
Emma stared out the window eagerly awaiting his return. After a few minutes Felix still hadn't returned. A sinking feeling hit Emma's stomach. Where was he? What's taking him so long? She asked herself. No good answer came to mind.
She grabbed her backpack and her pipe and walked to the gas stations doors. Before going in she looked over at the setting sun and sighed. She pushed open the glass door, a bell ringing over her head. "Pewdie?" She called into the store.
"Get out now!" Felix ordered right before someone grabbed Emma by the neck, she dropped her pipe, and was yanked into an isle where Felix was pointing his gun at a woman with a large barreled handgun.
"Pewdie!" Emma cried out in shock.
"Let her go." Felix tried to keep somewhat calm as he pointed the gun back and forth between the man and the woman.
"Put the gun down or your both dead." The man holding Emma in a choke-hold demanded, putting a gun to Emma's temple. His thick Italian accent echoed through the small store.
Felix looked between the two, each were on opposite sides of the isle. They both had white lab coats on. Were they doctors from the hospital nearby? Trying to get food and water for patients?
"Uh...You don't have to hurt anyone." Felix said as he sat his gun on the store shelf beside him. "We just want to get some gas, then we'll leave. Okay?" Felix tried to reason, holding his hands up in the air.
The couple started speaking Italian. Felix only understood small portions of the conversation.
"Um look my name is Felix. I'm taking care of this girl and I need to get us to my house. Just let us leave." He tried to humanize himself and Emma.
"What are they saying, Pewds?" Emma asked, in distress.
From what Felix could tell the woman wanted to let them go with some supplies. The man was a different story, tho. He wanted them to have nothing and feared there return if he let them live. He was enraged by the woman's kindness.
What kind of self-centered doctor was he? Felix wondered.
After a few minutes the Italian man started to settle his tone, but Felix understood some words that enraged him. His face turned to rage and anger as he turned to the woman, he slid his gun to the end of the top shelf, gabbed the woman's gun, and using her as a human shield as the man did with Emma.
"You can't! Let her go now!" Felix yelled, pointing the gun at the woman's head. His grip on the gun was tight but shaky. What the hell was he doing? He'd never threaten a life! But he had to to save one. So its the right thing to do, right? He took a deep breath and steadied his hand. "Neither of us want to do this. Just let her go and give me your gun." The man froze then released Emma. She ran behind Felix as she breathed heavily, almost in tears. "Now slide the gun over." Felix demanded. The man put his hand on the barrel of the gun and slid it across the marble-like floor. "Emma, grab the gun for me, please." Felix used a gentle voice with her. She nodded and grabbed the gun, quickly retreating behind Felix. He stuck the gun in his belt loop and continued holding the other gun to the Italian woman's head. "Go fill your backpack. Then come back to me." He used his gentle voice to instruct Emma.
She went around the store, grabbing food, water, deodorant, gum, snacks, and energy shots. She kept looking out the window that went around the whole middle of the walls. No zombies in sight. Thank God. She ran back to Felix. Emma instantly noticed that the woman was released over to the man. They were holding each other closely. Felix still had his gun pointing at them, not taking the chance of letting his guard down.
"You know how to fill a gas tank, right?" Felix asked.
"Uh y-yeah. I've seen my mom do it before." She stuttered.
"Okay. Do you think you could go fill the tank for me?" He asked as calmly as possible, his voice still slightly shaking. Emma nodded and went to the door. "Don't forget the pipe." When Felix heard the store door open and close he started to looked back and forth between the couple and Emma as Emma walked to the car. When Emma was far enough away Felix's facial emotions changed. "I should kill you for what you said." Felix bared emotions of hate, showing clearly on his face as he backed out of the store. The woman winced and took comfort into the mans chest. The man stood there, holding the woman close. He said nothing but his eyes begged for mercy. The man slightly backed up into the shelf behind him. His free hand gripping the middle metal shelf. His other hand was wrapped tightly around the woman. Her long black curly hair covered his hand. The man kissed the top of her head, not taking his eyes off Felix.
Felix sighed and left the store. He got to the car as Emma was getting in. She was visibly shaking and it worried Felix. His anger turned to care in a snap as he entered the car. Emma sniffed and quickly wiped away a tear, hoping Felix wouldn't see. Luckily he didn't, or at lest she thought he didn't.
"Are you okay?" Felix asked, pitty filled his eyes as his eyebrows raised in concern.
"I'm okay." Emma said in a quite tone. Felix could tell she was lying but had no time to debate about her feelings. Maybe when everything calmed down some he would bring it up again.
Pewds started the car and revved off into the streets. The ride was silent for an awkwardly long amount of time.
"What did they say?" Emma broke the silence. Felix looked confused for a second. When it clicked in his mind he pretended he was confused.
"What do you mean?" He asked, his eyes not looking away from the road.
"The people in the gas station, what did they say? Why'd you get so mad?"
Felix paused, he didn't want to tell her that they wanted to take her away to some testing facility. She didn't need to worry about other people trying to do the same. Aren't zombies enough to worry about? "It's not important." He told her, shrugging his shoulders.
"Then why'd you flip out?" She was curious about anything she didn't know about, some might call it nosiness, so this was really getting to her.
Pewds stopped the car. He could hardly see the cars left in the road. It was to dark even with his head lights on. "We're going to have to stay here for tonight. Are you okay with sleeping in the car?"
She sighed, annoyed by the change of subject. "Yeah."
"Okay, I think I have a picnic blanket in the back. You can sleep back there with it." Felix pointed to the back set. Emma crawled into the back and covered up with the blanket that was just long enough for her. "Try to get some sleep, if its possible." Felix sighed. He pulled off his jacket, turned off the car, leaned his seat back, and covered up with his jacket. After about a half an hour or so, they both fell into a restless sleep.
The sounds of moaning and groaning zombies filled the night, no lights could be seen for miles. Everyone in a building was smart or the electric was cut off. The complete darkness and the cries of the zombies went on all night, everywhere. Soon it was brightening and the roads could once again be driven on without such a high risk of crashing. Felix and Emma still lied asleep until Felix woke to the vibration of his phone in his pocket. He automatically thought about Marzia.
"Hello?! Marzia!?" He excitedly asked.
"Felix?" She whispered.
"Are you okay? Are your parents there?"
"No, they never came back from the store." She was still whispering.
"What's wrong? Why are you so quiet?" His excitement turned to concern.
"There are people outside the house. They're trying to get in."
Felix was now completely on high alert, his face now full of fear. "Did you lock the doors?" He asked as he started the car and took off.
"Yes. I pushed the dresser in front of the front door but that's all I could move." She whispered. Felix could hear beating and muffled yells in the background.
"That's good. What about the back door? Is it barricaded?"
"I just have a chair jamming the nob." She whimpered as the yells and pounding got louder.
"It's okay, Marzia. I'm almost home. Just try to calm down and hide until I get there. Okay?" He said as a tear built in his eye.
"O-okay." The line was silent until Felix heard her foot steps heading up stares. A door opened and closed. "I'm in my room." She was still whispering. A loud crash came through the phone, then the phone was dropped and Marzia let out a yelp.
"Marzia?!" Felix almost yelled as he speeded down the road, maneuvering around cars.
"I-I think there in the house, Felix." She was in tears, her dogs now barking in the background.
"Get in the closet. Stay as quiet as possible." Felix heard her fumble around for a minute.
"I'm in the closet. The-they're down stairs." She stuttered slightly.
"Okay, just be as quiet as possible. I'm almost there."
Hearing foot steps come up the steps she decided to use what could be her final words to Felix wisely. "If anything happens...I just want to tell you that I love you more then anything." A tear rolled down both their eyes.
"You're going to be okay. I'm almost there." Felix said through his tears. He couldn't lose the one he loved more than anything.
Her bedroom door slammed open.
