Chapter 13

Harry's point of view

“Right guys,” James said, as the boys assembled for their morning lesson on using their powers. “I'm sorry I haven't had enough time for this lately, and it's been a while since the last lesson.” Well he's got a good excuse for it, thought Harry. James had been spending a large about of time in discussions with President Obama and his advisers. He had also been gearing up his organisation to find and fight the people behind Guantanamo. Niall said that James has been recruiting people to fight, and also administrators to organise the search for other prisons. Not to mention that James has also been organising research into the power-blocker we captured, to see if its effects can be countered.

“You guys need to keep practising on your mental defences, like I taught you last time,” James told them. “I've thought of something that will help you guys do that better,” James explained. “Also it will kill two birds with one stone. The solution for my being really busy is that Zayn can give you all lessons in telepathy.” Huh? Harry wondered. Lessons in telepathy?

“Anyone with a power has limited telepathic capabilities,” James explained. “It's pretty hard to learn and limited in scope, so we don't normally teach it.” Wow. 'Telepathic capabilities'? Does he mean we can do what Zayn does? “I'm among the best at it, and Alistair's very good, as are a few others. But most people who know it can be done don't bother to learn or aren't very good at it,” James continued. “Anyway, what I'm getting at is that you guys can all learn to hear thoughts if you focus, or speak into people's minds. Range is limited to about 20 metres I'm afraid, and no more than a few people at a time. Nothing close to what Zayn is capable of.”

“We can all do telepathy?!” Louis shouted excitedly. That is so cool! thought Harry. He shared a grin with the other boys. Imagine what pranks we could get up to if we could all communicate telepathically!

“Hold on...” Harry said slowly to James. “Does that mean you can hear what we're thinking?”

James grinned. “Of course Harry,” came James' voice in Harry's mind. From the widening of all the boys' eyes it looked like they had all heard it too. Wow! Cool!

Wait... does that mean he's been doing it ever since we met? Harry tried to think what James might have heard in his mind over the last year. James winked at him cheekily. Harry tried not to blush. Well probably nothing Zayn hasn't heard, I suppose, Harry thought, justifying it to himself.

Harry shrugged. “All right, then,” he said to James, “How do we do it?”

James gestured to Zayn with a grin. “Ask your new teacher. He's way, way, better at telepathy than me anyway.” James looked down at his watch. “I've got a meeting with Obama shortly, so see y'all later,” James said, emphasizing the American slang. Harry felt James begin a teleport, and a moment later James vanished. It's awesome that I'm getting better and better at sensing powers being used, Harry thought. That had been one of the things that James had spent quite a lot of time teaching the boys. One bonus is that I don't get a fright when James or Beth teleport unexpectedly. Harry remembered one time several weeks earlier when Paul got the fright of his life from Beth appearing suddenly beside him with one of the boys. The surprised Paul had dropped a glass he'd been holding which had hit the ground and shattered before Harry could think to use his power to stop it. The boys had laughed at Paul about that for the rest of the day.

Harry turned to look at Zayn, and found the other boys were all staring at Zayn questioning. “Er, um, ah,” Zayn began. “I'm, um, not that great at teaching telepathy actually.” Seriously? thought Harry. He's been helping the kids in Texas learn to use their powers like the rest of us. He must be able to teach us something.
