Chapter 34
Louis' point of view
Louis jumped around on one leg trying to pull on the pair of pants he had selected. I swear I measured these carefully before I chose them out of the rack. The other boys were already strapping themselves into soldier vests and protective gear. Liam had a few grenades hanging from his belt, but had been careful to make sure that Louis himself was carrying no explosives. Ha, I managed to go through Guantanamo carrying explosives without burning them and blowing myself up. You'd think he could trust me a little.
Zayn's voice immediately responded in Louis' head, “For virtually all the time in Guantanamo that you were carrying grenades. Lou, you weren't able to use your power, remember? There were power blockers active, so you weren't dangerous. I assume you'd prefer not to blow yourself up by mistake?”
Louis rolled his eyes at Zayn, but eventually admitted to himself that Zayn had a point. Blowing myself up by mistake would be pretty embarrassing. I'd never get over it. Literally.
Once they were ready, General McGuire drove them out of the military base in an army truck and to near the enemy fortress. Louis could see it vaguely in the distance, dark except for a few lights that shone out of the occasional window. It didn't seem very active. Hopefully that won't change too much when we get in there.
General McGuire gave them one last lecture about being careful, which Louis ignored. “And remember boys, if you need any help just use the radios. I'll send the army in immediately. But keep radio silence otherwise, as they might detect the radio signal.”
Louis stepped onto the transparent disc Liam had created, then offered his hand to Beth to assist her. Beth snorted and stepped up onto Liam's disc without taking Louis' hand. Louis heard Harry sniggering at the interaction. Woman just don't appreciate chivalry these days, Louis thought with a sigh. He turned and waved goodbye with the others to General McGuire.
Louis felt Beth teleport them, taking them high into the air above the fortress. Despite the dark, Louis could see that it was a long way down. He could see the tiny twinkling lights far below them. Liam's disc began to descend slowly. It's a pity Beth can't just take us straight inside the facility. Stupid power-blocking fields.
Louis noticed Niall moving to hug Zayn. Huh? Louis could barely make them out in the dark. Louis squinted to check that the person Niall was hugging was Zayn rather than Liam. Maybe Niall has gotten the wrong person in the dark? Louis wondered to himself. After all, if Niall was going to cheat on Liam with Zayn, he'd hardly do it right in front of Liam. The thought almost made Louis laugh out loud. The thought of Niall ever cheating on Liam was completely ludicrous. Niall had been pining after Liam for years. Ever since they first met, Niall's had a crush on Liam. Louis knew from mind links with Niall that Niall could still clearly remember meeting Liam for the first time. It was pretty much love at first sight, at least from Niall's point of view. There was no chance that Niall would ever cheat on Liam now that they were finally together.
So what's Niall doing then? Louis squinted in the dark, trying to make the other boys out. Is Zayn shaking? Louis wondered. It's not that cold. The Colombian night was rather warm actually. But Zayn definitely looked to Louis to be shivering. Louis frowned more, and then noticed that Niall wasn't emitting his usual emotions. Around the boys, usually Niall emitted happiness and love on a constant basis. But now the emotions Niall is emitting are... calmness and... safety? Louis wasn't sure that those things even were emotions, but it conjured up memories of his mother tucking him into bed at night, and his mother hugging him. It was the feeling that everything was going to be okay. But why? Louis wondered. Niall doesn't often change the emotion he's emitting.
