Chapter 10

Zayn's point of view

Louis grinned widely at Zayn's words. Trust Louis to get excited at the thought of breaking into a police station.

Beth looked a bit shocked though. “Break into the police station?” Beth asked in a shocked voice. “Why? Are they holding the pyro responsible for the fires in there?”

Beth stopped walking, her face paling. “Is it like Guantanamo?! Do they hold people with powers captive?!” she whispered, sounding horrified.

Zayn sniggered. He scratched his head and turned to Beth. “Seriously? You think that they'd hold people with powers captive in a small town police station?” Zayn rubbed a hand across his forehead before continuing. “No. There's nothing weird or freaky about the police station, and they don't have anyone captive. But they do have information on their investigation about the fires. Information I would like to read.”

Zayn led them around the block until they were directly behind the police station. Zayn sensed no one was home in the house that backed onto the station, so he led them through the section and then got Beth to teleport them past the tall fence and into the police station grounds. “Fortunately there aren't many policemen on duty at the moment,” he told them. “Take us into that room please,” he asked Beth, as he pointed to one of the offices out the back of the station.

They appeared inside the office, which featured a whiteboard covered with photos and lines drawn between them. “Wow, I didn't realise police really did that,” Beth said. “I thought this was only what police investigations looked like on TV.”

Zayn heard the door handle click and turned to see it was Louis, locking the door from the inside. “Just ensuring our privacy,” the boy said. “As a world-famous celebrity, I prefer not to be disturbed while committing criminal acts. It's bad for my public image, you know.” Although, we might be able to play it off to the media as being part of our movie filming, Zayn thought. It's a good excuse that can cover doing almost anything. We just need a cameraman with us to make it look more plausible.

“Well, well, well,” Beth said. “I recognise her.” She was looking at one of the photos on the whiteboard. The caption underneath said “Emma Gregson. Aged 24.” The picture showed the pyro girl they had briefly met. Lines connecting her picture indicated she had some sort of connection with all the people who had lost homes to the fires. Although all the dozen or so pictures on this board seem to be connected to all the fires. That's the trouble with small towns. Everyone knows everyone else. So everyone's a suspect.

Zayn tried reading through all the notes on the board, while Louis sat down at the desk and began reading through the various reports there. Whoever's handwriting this is needs to go back to school and learn to write legibly, Zayn thought, as he tried to decipher it.

After having read through all the files, Zayn had to admit that they weren't much the wiser. Louis copied down the names and details of all the police suspects. “So what now?” Beth asked.

Zayn frowned. “Well there's a pyro in town and she's a suspect anyway. Chances are, it's her.”

Louis however, didn't seem to agree. “These reports analysed where in the house the fires started Zayn.” He gestured to the desk. “They weren't the kinds of places I would expect from a pyro who couldn't control her power properly. As you and I both know well, the number one most likely things for a pyro to do is set fire to their own bed or burn their clothes off. She hasn't done that... well not recently, anyway, so she's either been trained or trained herself to the point where she doesn't do that anymore. I don't think it's her doing this.”
