Chapter 15

Liam's point of view

The next morning, the boys were chilling in the dressing room, having just done an early-morning TV appearance. Liam was still a bit sleepy. Tonight's performance will be our last concert in Canada on this tour. They had a late dinner planned after it to celebrate.

Beth will be bringing Eleanor, Perrie and Danielle over for it, Liam thought. Liam had been surprised that Danielle hadn't broken off their relationship after he told her about Guantanamo. Instead she'd been extremely supportive. The few times he'd seen her since then, she had been encouraging and told him how much she admired the work that he and the others were doing.

Yet the texts they'd exchanged between the two of them had been getting fewer and fewer. They no longer ever talked by Skype now that it was so easy to meet face-to-face via teleportation. But I don't actually see her that much any more. Liam was surprised to realise that he didn't actually miss seeing her. He felt strangely empty at the thought of seeing Danielle tonight.

I'm not looking forward to seeing her tonight... he realised with surprise. It's not that I don't want to see her, it's just that I don't much care whether I do, one way or the other.

Does that mean I don't love her any more? Or am taking her for granted? Or am I becoming too focused on other things... band and powers stuff... that I'm not giving my girlfriend the attention she deserves? Liam sat, biting his lip, and trying to figure out what it was that he felt. Should I break up with her or should I put more effort into our relationship?

“Boys!” shouted Paul excitedly, rushing in with a newspaper. “Look at this!”

Liam's eyes went wide when he saw the headline: 'Obama Closes Guantanamo'. What?!

Liam snatched the paper off Paul and laid it out on the table and began reading. The other boys crowded in beside Liam to read it too, except Zayn who gave Liam a grin from when he was sitting and smoking a cigarette. He really shouldn't be doing that inside, Liam thought. Liam's eyes went back to the article. “It's a cover-up for the destruction of Guantanamo,” Liam said as he finished reading. “And Obama seems pretty serious about bringing the people behind Guantanamo to justice.” Of course, we can't exactly bring them to justice publicly. Trying to put the people running Guantanamo in front of a court of law where they testified about powers would be silly. The article simply talked about 'investigating human rights abuses' associated with Guantanamo.

Liam gave the other boys high-fives as they finished reading.

Harry's point of view

Harry leaned back, having enjoyed the nice dinner. Vancouver does good food, he thought. It's a very pretty city too. But I've seen better night-life elsewhere.

Harry was seated next to Paul at the large table. He looked around at the couples seated around them: Niall and James, Liam and Danielle, Zayn and Perrie, Louis and Eleanor. Maybe I should get a girlfriend? Harry had been officially single for several months now since his brief 'romance' with Taylor Swift. That had been organised by the guys from Modest Management. They had come to Harry saying that Taylor was looking for a publicity boyfriend and wondered if he was interested. And of course I was. The whole point of being a celebrity is that you get to date celebrities. Though Harry had been rather disappointed to find that Taylor hadn't been at all interested in putting out. Oh well, I get to say that I dated Taylor Swift at any rate. Harry ran through a list of hot female celebrities in his head, wondering which one he ought to ask out.
