"(Y/N)! Wake up! It's the last week of school!"
I roll over on my bed not wanting to leave my comfortable position.
"I don't want to!" I yell in reply to my older sister, Touka.
It wasn't just an excuse. I really didn't have to. Yesterday all the graduated seniors said their farewells to their classmates and collected their belongings. Even my professor, Mr. Utaka, said that there was no need for us seniors to attend school this week. I tried to persuade my sister of this but she wouldn't have it.
"Well you're going somewhere else but this house." She says, clearly annoyed.
I sigh. "Fine!" I gave up.
I reluctantly pulled the blankets off of me and sat up on my bed. "Why can't she let me sleep?" I thought as I stomped towards the bathroom. After finishing my toiletries, (brushing teeth, washing face, washing up quickly) I changed out of my pajamas into my favorite outfit. I decided to keep my hair down, put on my warm coat, and pulled on my warm combat boots. I grabbed my phone and headed down stairs.
"Well, Bye Touka." I say dismissively while I shut the door behind me.
When I stepped outside, the cold air made my nose turn red immediately. "Ugh it's raining", I thought, putting my hood on. Well what did I expect, it's June in Japan. I walked down the street watching the morning strollers pass me by while I debated whether or not I should go to Starbucks or call my best friend to try to meet up. *Sigh* I suppose trying to reach her was useless at this point. She was always so busy and barely answered my calls anymore.
I swing open the door to Starbucks after shaking the water drops off my hood. "Hi...may I have a Grande Hot Chocolate." I asked the cashier. "It's wet out there, isn't it?" The man asked as he handed me my drink with a smile. "It sure is." I replied by handing him the money. I looked at the cashier's name tag...it read Akinari. He looked strangely familiar.
"ONE HOT CHOCOLATE" He says, turning his back to me.
"Hey, do I know you from somewhere?" I ask, while waiting for my drink.
"Hmmm I don't know?" "Do you go to Daikoku?" He ask.
"Indeed I do." "Well I did...I graduated yesterday actually." I say, refusing to lose eye contact.
"Oh that's why! I just graduated too! That's odd how I don't recognize you. He says while he furrows his brow.
"Yes it certainly is." I reply. A couple seconds went by as the cashier gazes at me.
"Well thanks for th-"
"Now that I think about it..." He says, unintentionally cutting me off. "You do look familiar. Aren't you, (Y/N?)" His eyes widen.
I looked at him confused.
"I recognize you now." He says with a smile across his face. "You scored a perfect score on the entrance exams" "You gave that speech at To-Oh university, with Light?"
"Oh...ya" I scoff, slightly annoyed at the mention of Light's name. "You go to To-Oh too?" I ask.
"Uh no. I'm not that smart," he said giggling while his cheeks turned red. "My family is just really close with the Yagamis, so I...uh..went there to support him."
"Oh! Cool!" I said as he handed me my drink. "Well, nice talking to you, um..." I look at his name tag again, "Akinari", I say with a smile.
"Yeah, you too! Come by again if you ever want a discount! Haha!" He says blushing as he waves goodbye.
"Thanks!" I say while walking out the door.
"Ugh Yagami." I th honk to myself. I hated that kid. For years we had been school rivals. Every club I joined he joined, every school position I ran for he ran for. He was so charming but cocky at the same time, and for some reason I'm the only one who saw through it. All throughout high school we fought for the top spot as valedictorian, but always shared the spotlight. I even thought I had a chance at the top score for the entrance exams, but of course I tied with Light AGAIN. I sighed, quickly pushing the thought of him out of my head. I sipped my hot chocolate and put my headphones in to drown the thought of school out of my head. School was over, I needed a break.
After walking around town for about 20 minutes I decided to stop by my sister's favorite restaurant to get some ramen for us. Ever since our parents passed away, it had been tough to make ends meet. It was rare that we had been able to splurge, but this time I thought, why not? After all, times had been stressful. After ordering, I decided to watch youtube while I waited for our take out. "Hmm, what to watch." I think to myself as I scrolled through my feed.
"F*ck!" I yelle, looking up from my phone. I clasped my hand over my mouth as I analyzed the dirty looks and whispers I got across the room. "Oh, sorry." I whispered as I grimace. I look back at my phone.
BREAKING NEWS: "KIRA KILLS ANOTHER 40 PEOPLE IN JAPAN PRISON."
I stare at my screen, wide-eyed. "40 people, what the f*ck.' I whisper. I look up, realizing the news was already playing on the Restaurant's television. The room falls silent.
