I've been alone for awhile now. The seasons have changed three times since my dad killed himself. Winter. Spring. Summer. He was weak, my dad. I'm better off with him gone, he'd only slow me down. He'd only get in the way.
I've been traveling aimlessly ever since my parents died. I've encountered a couple of groups. One tried to kill me, one wanted to take me in. I escaped the first and left the second one after a couple of weeks.
I can't stay in South Carolina. There's too many memories of my past here. At first I was gonna travel northwest, maybe go through Canada and up to Alaska. I changed my mind after I encountered my first herd of monsters. It's not smart to travel that far alone.
I've decided to go to New York. I've always wanted to see the Statue of Liberty in person. I'm anxious to leave, there's nothing here for me anymore.

"Welcome to Virginia" read the sign ahead of me. I've made it this far with three months of summer left to spare. I need to find a vacant house, it'll be dark soon.
As I search through neighborhood after neighborhood, trying to find one that seems safe enough to live in for a couple of days, I see a pick-up truck drive by. The bed of the truck was full of boxes, I can only guess it was loaded with food and ammunition.
Of course, I let curiosity get to me. I follow the truck, keeping my distance, until the truck leads me to a town with huge walls. The gate opens, the truck pulls in, the gate closes.
This place looks indestructible. Although, a thousand things could possibly go wrong. No one is safe anymore, ever. I can't live here, I'm better off alone. As I turn to walk away, I hear a female yell at me.
"Hey, kid. Are you alone or are you spying on us for someone?"
"I'm alone, but I was just leaving," I say.
"No, you're not," she says opening the gate, "I don't know if you're telling the truth or not."
"If I was with someone, why would they send a kid out to spy on you? Don't you think they'd send someone a little more trustworthy?"
She smiles, then rests her hand on her holster.
"Come in, we'll give you shelter."
I turn around and take a couple of steps in the opposite direction. Then stop, think for a minute, and turn back around. Do I really want to be alone again?
"Alright, fine."
