Tay's eyes were glued to the clock. She was impatiently waiting for the long hand to land on the three so she could get the hell out of there.
"One more minute," she whispered to herself as she continued to tap the table with the eraser of her pencil, ignoring the glare she was receiving from her annoyed lab partner, Jess.
"Can you stop?" the girl asked, wanting to snatch the pencil from her hand and snap it in half.
Tay rolled her eyes, a sarcastic remark on the tip of her tongue, but before she could reply, the bell rang. She let out the breath she had been holding for the past five minutes and shot up from her desk, grabbing her bag and jetting out of the classroom.
You see, Tay had somewhere to be, and that was at the coffee shop on the corner of Thames Street and South Broadway. Alex Gaskarth (the incredibly hot guy she's had a crush on since the fifth grade) was supposed to meet her there. He sent her a text the night before, asking her if she had any plans that afternoon. She eagerly replied with no, willing to cancel any and all plans she had after school just to hang out him. A few minutes later, he replied with the address to the coffee shop and told her to meet him there because he had something "important" to ask her.
Tay was beyond excited, but there was one thing she didn't understand, and that was why she had to meet him there. He had a car and they were going to the same place, so why couldn't he give her a ride?
Maybe his car isn't clean and he doesn't want me to see the inside, she thought. She kept telling herself this because it was less painful for her to believe that his car was a mess than it was to believe that he was embarrassed to be seen with her. She didn't want to think about that at the moment though, so she just pushed those thoughts aside.
She got to the coffee shop around two twenty to find Alex waiting there with one of his friends.
"Uh, hi," she said awkwardly as she slowly approached the booth.
She was a bit thrown off. She wasn't expecting another person to be there. She was hoping that it'd just be her and Alex.
The two boys set down their drinks and waved as she took a seat. As soon as Tay set her bag aside, Alex got straight to talking.
"This is my friend, Rian," he said, pointing the guy next to him. Tay nodded, but she couldn't care less about his name, she just wanted to know why he was there. "He's failing Calculus and he needs a tutor. Since you're the smartest person in my Calculus class, I thought that maybe you could tutor him."
"Wait..." she said, frowning slightly. "So you wanted me to come here so you could ask me to tutor your friend? That's all you wanted?" He nodded, smiling, oblivious to the pain he had caused her. "Oh...okay."
"So you'll do it?" Rian asked hopefully.
She shrugged then sighed. "Why not."
"Wow, you're a life saver!" Rian said thankfully, a huge smile spreading across his face.
She ignored his comment and looked over at Alex, who was now on his phone. He laughed at something on the screen before sliding it back into his coat pocket and turning to his friend. "It's almost three o'clock," he told him, his eye's meeting Tay's afterwards. "We have somewhere else to be, it's kind of important. I hope you don't mind it if we leave."
She shook her head and forced a smile. "Oh no, it's fine."
"Cool."
They stood up and grabbed their things, walking out the small booth and towards the exit.
"Oh yeah, one more thing," Alex yelled, turning back around. "Could you pay for our drinks? Thanks!"
Tay's eyes widened and before she could refuse, they were already out the door.
She couldn't believe what just happened. She felt like a complete idiot, like she had just been used. He didn't even thank her for her time or offer to buy her a drink. Instead, he left without an explanation and made her pay for the drinks she didn't even order.
"Guys like that make me sick," she heard from behind her.
Tay turned around and spotted a girl about her age with short, dark green hair walking towards her. The girl took a sip of her coffee before sitting down across from Tay. "You don't mind if I sit here, do you?"
Tay shrugged. "I guess not," she mumbled, not in the mood to argue with a stranger over a seat.
"I'm Jenna. I overheard everything, and I'm really sorry."
"It doesn't even matter," she lied. She was obviously embarrassed, but who wouldn't be if they were in her situation? "It's not like I've had a crush on him since elementary school, or like I freaked out when he texted me last night and asked me to meet him here, or like I spent all night trying to find the perfect outfit just to impress him. It's not like that at all."
Now tears were filling her eyes, and the hurt she felt was very clear. Jenna felt sorry for her, she wanted to find the guy who just ruined her day and beat the shit out of him. She didn't know the girl personally, but she knew she didn't deserve that. No one did.
"Don't cry over him, you're way better than that piece of shit," Jenna told her, moving beside her and rubbing her back in an attempt to comfort her.
Tay turned and buried her head into the chest of the stranger, and began to quietly sob. Her tears left wet stains on Jenna's shirt, but Jenna didn't care. She just wrapped her arms around her and held her tighter.
"You know what?" Jenna said, causing Tay to lift her head and look up at her.
"What?" she asked, sniffling a bit as she began to wipe away her tears.
"He needs to be taught a lesson."
Tay gasped, immediately getting the wrong idea. "Oh my god, no. We can't kill him," she whispered.
Jenna chuckled before shaking her head. "That's not what I meant. I meant you should get back at him, make him wish he hadn't hurt you."
"But it's not his fault, it's mine. I shouldn't have assumed -"
"It is not your fault," Jenna told her. "The dude's an asshole, and needs to be taught some manners."
Tay furrowed her eyebrows in confusion. "What?"
"Just come on," Jenna said as she stood up.
Jenna walked out of the coffee shop, pulling Tay along with her. She wasn't going to let that guy get away with hurting Tay's feelings.
"Where are we going?" Tay asked as the two got inside Jenna's car.
"We're getting revenge."
