"Why didn't you tell me you were the princess -- the Queen of Greenwood!?"
"Sorry, i guess it never came up in conversation."
"These are the things you gotta tell people, Jules !"
Amy's sighing heavily as i chuckle a bit.
"We gotta tell Nova and the others-"
"Wait, no! I dont want to tell them just yet!"
"Then why are you walking around in broad daylight with that on your head?"
I follow to where her finger had pointed to the top of my head.
There was a bright golden crown that shone so bright that it was practically challenging the sun. It sat in the center of my hair and I returned my gaze to Amy, who had still been staring at it.
"I had too. It's like a tradition.."
The older girl stands from her seat on the bed and lets out a heavy sigh, "okay,"
She had a foot already out the door when she utters something that was nearly understandable.
"You'll be surprised to find out what Nova will say when she finds out."
Once she leaves, I let out a long held breath. Then, I carefully take off the crown from my head and place it in a box. I push it under my bed.
---
"Julie, how're you feeling?"
When I look up from the book straddled in my hands, my eyes met with Davie's brown ones.
"I'm fine. Why are you asking?"
He shrugs sluggishly, "You know... I heard what happened to your mom.."
I hum and close my book. "Yeah, it's ok. I'm fine, Davie."
"Ok, good." That's when he smiles so brightly that I was practically blinded. Then, he looks at me, searching my eyes and I watch him.
"... What?"
"Nothing," he hums happily. He really is a kid. "You're really pretty."
"Uh, Davie?... Are you trying to hit on me?"
"I don't know. But, i do know you have a really nice smile."
"Yeah, you're hitting on me."
"I want to show you something, can you meet up with me during the two hour break?"
"I might have to do something for one of my classes, but i'll try."
"Alright, I'll see you later, though. Got to get to class before my teacher finds out i'm late. Again."
I nod and wave from my seat at the rectangular table in the cafeteria before he leaves the room. My back slumps into the chair and I return to my book, just until i hear my name again. Ugh.
"Julie, coming to swim practice today?"
I look up again once more to see Jax a few feet away from me, bag slung over his shoulders.
"Yeah... Davie just left, by the way."
"I know, I wanted to talk with you though."
"Oh," I say quietly as he nears me, "What do you need?"
He sits down heavily in the seat next to me and drops his bag on the table.
"Nothing, really. I just wanted to talk since we haven't in awhile."
"okay.. So how was your break?"
"Normal, i guess," he scratches the back of his neck, "how about you?"
"... Uh, it was okay."
"Okay?"
I guess no one had told Jax.
But before letting my mouth reluctantly spill what had happened over the break, i'd taken a deep breath. I had told him how sick my mother was before and he'd listen carefully. Everything but the fact that she and now I am a queen. His face was unreadable, though. Like always.
"I'm sorry, Julie." He says in a hushed tone.
Then the cafeteria starts to empty out, students rushing to their next class.
"Don't worry about it. We should get to class now, though."
He nods before also picking up his stuff and we both head out of the room.
