It was dark and I couldn't tell up from down or left from right. I continued to float through the black abyss of my mind until I saw I small flicker of light. Heat radiated from the small flame, drawing me closer and closer. My feet found solid ground and I continued to be pulled in by the flame. The light swayed and danced rhythmically in the non-existent wind. My hand reached out for the fire but before I could grasp the mysterious light it suddenly flared up. The blaze grew and began to burn through the wall that I had no idea was there. The fire tore through the wall as if it were paper, spreading to the areas on the sides of me as well as above and below. Within seconds the blackness was gone revealing a new setting.
I was in a house, but it was burning. I heard nothing at first, like watching a movie with the volume all the way down. Then out of nowhere sound came crashing into my eardrum. There was shouting and yelling in all directions. The crackling wood above me looked like it was about to come crashing down. I was scared. In the middle of the rapidly spreading conflagration was the little girl I saw from before. I couldn't see her face but for some odd reason I knew it was her.
Her mouth moved seemingly calling out for someone's but I couldn't hear her. She kept yelling but no one came to her. There was a loud snap and a piece of the ceiling fell missing her by a couple inches, singeing the end of her bouncy, soot covered hair.
She stumbled forward trying to find a way out. The smoke burned my eyes, making it hard to see. Suddenly she collided with another body; instead of being elated she trembled in fear. The person seemed to tower over her, like a log to a stick. Dangling, unconscious, over their shoulder was a small child wearing a pair of ash cover pajamas. The stranger reached for the girl and she attempted to jump out of the way but they got her by the end of her previously white, but now dark grey shirt. She struggled to get free but the stranger's grip never faltered. The ceiling crackled above and an orange glowing ember drifted from the burning wood and landed on their hand. The person released her as they retracted their hand in pain.
The smoke was getting thicker and I could feel my throat closing up. The world around me was beginning to spin and I knew my legs couldn't support me much longer. The person was a foggy blur through the raging fire but I could still see well enough to realize that he was reaching out for her again. This time she didn't move or rather couldn't move. The hand was inches away from her when I heard someone calling. The hand froze and they looked pass her to the person calling. They hesitated at first then whispered something into the girl's ears.
I almost jumped out of my skin when I heard the husky whisper in my own ears. "You never saw this, it's all your imagination." The voice said. Then the stranger turned around and ran into the fire. The girl fell to her hands and knee and was coughing hard, even though I couldn't hear her. Fire engulfed us both just as a young and frantic woman hobbled into the quickly dissipating room. Everything was a fusion of red, black, orange, and yellow. Everything was fire and could almost me certain that I was too.
All of a sudden everything shattered in an ear-splitting crash then everything was falling, including me.
Falling to what I wondered. To another fiery scenery, or maybe a wet wonderland. The ground came rushing towards me as I wonder what would happen when I finally reached it. Panic rose in my chest and I flailed my arms helplessly, I counted down the second until I would touch the base.
Just as my nose was a centimeter away from my next stage of dreaming, I opened my eyes to reality. I quickly sat up gasping for air and clutching the sheet so tightly I wasn't sure how it was still in one piece. I was so drenched in sweat that I could immediately feel the wetness of my shirt against my skin. I could feel my heart pounding wildly against my chest.
I looked around in bug-eyed wonder as panic began to set in, forcing my tired body to scramble to my feet. Before I could start screaming for my freedom and cursing the bastards that locked me up, I began to recall where I was and who it was that laid fast asleep in their cushiony bed. The room was nearly pitch black, expect for the soothing nightly glow of the moon that shone through the thin curtains of the window. I stood against the wall calming myself and trying to make sense of the blazing dream. No matter how hard I tried nothing in the compounds of my messed up brain could aid in providing clarity to the fiery scene. I let out long but quiet sigh. Any drowsiness that I had by now had been driven away by the anxiety of make believe confinement and the uneasiness of incomprehension.
I stared blankly at the wall hoping that my body would mistake boredom with tiredness. A silent frustration began to take over as lengthy minutes elapsed and my state consciousness remained stagnant.
I looked back at the window in an attempt to soothe my nerves. The moon had changed its position and was now shining directly into the room. The ray of moonlight shone through the gap in the curtains producing a slight blue path on thick wooden floor. My eyes followed the trail as it ran in a straight line across the room. The light hit the wall then began to travel up. Finally it came to an abrupt end on the handle of the door. The knob glinted at the offering of moonlight. Before I could stop myself I found my bare feet making their way to the door. I put my hand on the knob and twisted. To my surprise it was open. I looked back at Maice; I froze when he shifted and relaxed when he turned over and settled back down.
I looked back at the door, with the knob still in hand, then took a deep breath and pushed the door open. I popped my head out looked both ways, it was dark but there wasn't a fender in sight. I pushed the door open just enough to allow my body through then inaudibly closed the door behind me. I stood in the empty hallway wondering the familiar question, where do I go from here?
I didn't really have a plan for what I would do when I got out. I knew my intentions weren't to escape because I didn't even know the way to the cells much less the exit.
I came to the conclusion that my intentions were pure curiosity. With that in mind I decided to give myself a personal late night tour.
