"Wait here," he said before sprinting to a nearby stand. I did as I was told and stood there, staring at the ground and counting the seconds that passed. I was at one hundred thirty nine when he came back me had one hand behind his back and the other holding Titus's food. He nodded towards a small bench that sat outside of a small tech store. We walked in the direction of his nod and took a seat, he put the food on the opposite end of the chair so that our knee brushed against each other. Finally he revealed three thin rectangles wrapped expertly in silver paper. I looked at the thin shapes in confusion then tentatively took one. He put one into the pocket on his thigh and unwrapped the other, it was a swirling fusion of colors that ranged from vibrant red to a brilliant blue. Maice broke off a piece and just as he was about to put it in his mouth he caught me staring at him.
"What?" He lowered the piece from his mouth. "Do I have something on my face?"
"No... I was just wondering, what is this?"
"What do you mean, what is it? It's a Mellsa bar. How have you never had one?"
"I've never even heard of it." I said honestly. Maice's eyes flick in random directions as he went through the memories packed into his brain. I tried to come up with plausible reasons too, the one that made the most sense was that since I was I wander I lived off of rations nothing fancy but it kept me alive. I contradicted the idea because I knew that even if I didn't get to eat it I would still probably hear about it like I did with all the other new foods in Reza. Before I could start with a new idea Maice's eyes grew wide like he had a breakthrough."I'm sorry, I just remembered that were originally from Reza."
"Yeah, but what does me being from Reza have to do with what this is?" I asked holding it up slightly.
"Well, last year things weren't going very good with the plants so people were getting sick from not having the nutrition but then this guy comes along and invents the Mellsa bar, he said each bar has the same amount of nutrients as eight fruits and vegetables put together put together plus it tastes good. People started eating it and it really worked but literally half a month later the plants started getting better. At this point people didn't need Mellsa bars because they have the actual thing. It would be a waste to stop making them so they got turned into light snacks and desserts." He said it all in one breathe and looked very pleased with his very long answer to my very short question.
"Well now I know what it is and its backstory." I giggled.
"Sorry, I guess I kind of got into it," He said coyly.
"No problem, shall we." I raised the silver bar and Maice raised his. He waited while I unwrapped a section, exposing its blend of bright colors and broke off a piece. We soundlessly counted to three.
"One, Two, Three..."
Then we popped it into our mouths. I closed my eyes so that I could savor the taste. Sweet, sour, and some other flavor danced the tango over my tongue. A second burst of flavor started and was even more powerful than the first. Taste turned into waves crashing and colliding with one another to make a delicious scene. The warmth of my mouth melted the piece within fifteen seconds and left me wanting more. The second I open my eyes I saw Maice staring at me.
"What," I asked
"How was it?" he said with a lopsided smile.
"Good," I said modestly "Just good," he raise an eyebrow. The slight movement made his hazel eyes shine brighter, my heart thumped.
"Okay it was good... Fantastic, delicious, the second best thing I ever tasted." I open my hands wide to exaggerate my point. The first best thing went to go old potatoes.
"I'm glad," He said with a smile then he put the rest of the bar into his pocket, stood up and checked his watch. "Okay we really have to go pick up Titus now, he's probably—"
Maice was cut off by an old lady's scream.
"Help, that man just stole my bag!" she hollered with a skinny finger pointing in the direction of the bag-snatcher. Immediately after I caught the sight of a middle-aged man running away with a sack. He had shaggy black hair and an even shaggier beard. His clothes were dirty but still intact. I look to my side and saw air in the space that Maice once filled, I knew instantly that he went after the man. He surged for the shaggy thief taking leaping steps. In a couple of seconds he had the guy tackled to the floor, the man struggled under Maice's grip. Maice forced the man's hands into a position where he could hold them with one hand while still having the secure hold. Everyone who was able to see the scene unfold stood in silence, well all but the little old lady. She hobbled over to Maice with a toothy smile spread across her old wrinkly face.
"Oh thank you so much young man. You're a hero. I just... I just... Oh my I don't even have the words to express my gratitude," she exclaimed. Maice brought the thief to his feet and picked up the bag, the aged woman gratefully took it off his hands.
"It was no problem at all ma'am, I'm just happy to help," Maice smiled back. Maice and the man now had their back to me so when I was the only one to notice the thief make the first movement of a jerk, my mind scream to watch out, but my mouth didn't move. The man freed himself and swung for Maice's head, luckily he ducked in time but the thief took this as an opportunity and bolted. He pushed and shoved through the crowd to get away, but before Maice could take a step, a group of men were already on the thief's tail trying to capture him and restore their position as the hero.
We all watched for a moment but when the 'heroes' tackle the man there was a sigh of relief and the attention directed itself back to Maice who without me even knowing had made his own getaway. I looked around for moss green cargo pants and a grey shirt but couldn't find the combination.
I shoved my bar into my back pocket, pick up Titus's food, and decide to search for Maice on foot. I took two steps and immediately got pulled back by a familiar hand. "Sorry for ditching you but if I didn't sneak away we would have been there forever." he whispered. I understood what he meant so I without a word I followed him to the path behind the row of shops. We walk for ten minutes and comfortable silence and not once mentioned the whole tackling of the thief, we didn't need to. It was as if the moment dissipated into the air.
We reached the trinket shop and found Titus waiting outside, the moment he saw us he came running.
