Their presence was intimidating. They had an aura of power around them, that made people part and give them way. Though they were still far enough to hear us, Abhimanyu, who was a few steps behind his brother, looked at us knowingly and smirked at me. I bristled and glared at him.
"Hey. Fancy seeing you guys here." Dev said, innocently, too innocently. Diya glared at him. He ran his hand through his hair nervously and looked at her sheepishly.
I just waved at them and smiled awkwardly and looked away.
"Hey, Diya." Abhi said, in a deep voice that made shivers run down my body.
I gritted my teeth, I cannot let him have this effect on me.
"What you guys watching?'' He asked her, totally ignoring me. That pissed me off to another level and I refused to speak to him.
"Chennai Express." Diya answered.
He scoffed and I narrowed my eyes at him.
"Come watch Conjuring with us." He said.
Diya looked at me and said, "No. You guys carry on. We are going for this. Maybe next time."
I sighed in relief and smiled my thanks to Diya, with my eyes, which did not go unnoticed by Abhi's watchful eyes.
"Why not? Come on. Let's watch a movie together. If you don't want to watch Conjuring, then we will join you guys for the movie." Dev said.
I looked at Diya in panic. I didn't want to watch a movie with them, I was already intimidated by Abhi and I didn't want him to know that.
"I'm not going to watch Chennai Express." Abhi said, arrogantly.
"Good. Why don't you go ahead and watch Conjuring and leave us alone?" I said, annoyed.
"Scared?" He taunted me.
"Obviously not. It's just that I don't want to watch a movie with you. No offense, Dev" I said and smiled apologetically at Dev.
He just smiled back at me.
"Your just giving silly reasons. You know, you can accept your a coward." He taunted me again.
He looked at me and his eyes glinted with triumph and I felt like a prey falling for a predator's trap.
I bristled angrily. How dare he call me a coward. But I am scared to watch a horror movie. I don't have a single bone in my body that is brave. Abhi had put me in a fix. He knew that if I refused to watch the movie with them, I would seem like a coward, which my pride wouldn't allow and the other alternative would be to watch a movie with them. He knew what I would choose and on purpose had led me to this.
"Fine." I said, looking him right in the eyes.
He grinned at me and said, "I'll get the tickets."
After he left, Diya asked, "Ana, are you sure? We don't have to go. You're not comfortable and you are scared of horror movies."
"No. I'm not a coward." I said, stubbornly.
She sighed. She knew that she couldn't change my mind when I was angry or being stubborn.
Abhi came back with the tickets and we went into the theatre to find our seats. Dev and Diya were in front of me chatting away happily while I was trailing behind, cursing them (in my mind) with Abhi silent, next to me. We had got seats in the middle and on either side of the open seats there were other men so, Dev, who was in front, sat on one of the open seats and Diya sat next to him. I hesitated before entering our aisle, because I knew Abhi would end up sitting next to me on the other side. I was begging with Diya with my eyes when Abhi said, close to my ears, "Ladies first."
I shivered involuntarily and hissed at him, "You are so annoying, Abhimanyu." A flicker of surprise crossed his face and he looked at me tenderly. Unable to look at him after that, I sat on my seat next to Diya. I had stunned him momentarily by talking to him and saying his name. He sat beside me with a small smile on his face.
I was nervous. As the movie began, I knew I had made the wrong choice. My pride could go take a hike. I had my eyes closed and my hands clasped over my ears. I hoped since it was dark nobody could see me in this humiliating state. But, from the faint laughter coming next to me, I knew I hoped wrong. I opened my eyes to glare at him and he grinned at me. I turned my eyes to the screen and quickly shut them again. Though I had my ears closed I could still hear the sounds. God! when will this torture end. Someone tapped lightly on my shoulder and I screamed. I could hear laughter around me and opened my eyes to see all three of them laughing at me. I glared at them. I saw that the lights were on and it was intermission.
"Do you guys want popcorn?" Dev asked.
"Yup" Diya said, while I said, "No" at the same time.
Diya looked at me in disbelief. I loved popcorn, especially cheese popcorn. I just shrugged my shoulders and she smiled at me.
Dev looked at us quizzically and shook his head, like he didn't want to know what that was.
All the three of them got up to go out to get some snacks, while I sat paralyzed in my place.
Diya asked, "You don't wanna come?"
I shook my head. I knew that if I went out of the auditorium I wouldn't be coming back . I just waved her to go on and catch up to Dev and Abhi. When Diya reached them, they left. Halfway to the doors, Abhi looked around and saw me still sitting in my seat. He frowned and spoke something to them and came back. I looked away when he sat next to me .
He cleared his throat and began, " I'm really sorry. I didn't know you would be this scared."
I still didn't look at him and just shrugged my shoulders.
"What the hell am I supposed to do to make you talk to me, let alone look at me?" He said angrily.
I looked at him in shock. His eyes were staring at me in anger and frustration. Someone had a temper.
