"We did good today," Lauryn told me as we closed up the restaurant. Besides the fact that Georgia and Sapphire been on our heads, it was a pretty good day today. Business was at its best and the money was pouring in.
"Yeah," I mumbled, not really wanting to talk. These past few days has been nothing but a living hell for me.
The chilly night air caused me to zip my jacket up and throw my hood on. I saw Corey off in the distance waiting for me in my car. My stomach started to turn at the sight of him.
"I have a question I been meaning to ask you," Lauryn told me. I stopped looking at my vehicle and looked at her. "What's up?"
"Does Corey put his hands on you," she asked, making my heart pound fast, "I mean, I don't mean to be all in your business, but when Sapphire first told him she was pregnant, he flipped out and beat her."
I felt like I wanted to faint, although we were outside breathing up fresh air, it felt like I was lacking oxygen and bound to die anytime soon. I ran off to a nearby trash can and threw up everything I ate today.
"Are you okay," Lauryn asked me as Corey started to honk in the background. I wiped the corner of my mouth with a napkin from inside of my purse before throwing a mint inside. I looked at her with tears in my eyes. "Tell me you ain't just say pregnant."
"I thought you knew by now Alexus," she said with a remorseful look on her face. She threw her hand over her mouth. "I am so sorry."
I stayed quiet, unable to speak. I wish I could escape a man like Corey, but I couldn't. I didn't know how and I wished I did.
My car pulled up to us from the side of my eyes. "I'll catch you later," Lauryn said before walking off. I made my way to the car and got in.
"You heard me honking and shit, bitch! Pull some bullshit like that again, I dare you," Corey snapped as he drove off like a maniac, "I ain't have to come get yo' dumb ass."
"Corey, you riding around in my damn car," I defended myself. He managed to drive and sock me right in my jaw at the same time. I held on to it feeling my hate for him deepen.
I stayed silent the remainder of the ride, but the news I just received was something that I was going to bring up as soon as we walked through the front door of our apartment.
"When were you going to tell me that you got Sapphire pregnant," I asked before he got too comfortable. He locked up the front door before standing in front of me.
"What you so mad for," he asked with a smirk on his face. Tears slid down my face as I thought about the miscarriage that I had. "I was suppose to have your baby!"
"And you could've, but you had a miscarriage. Don't be mad at me, be mad at yo' damn self," he threw it all in my face, "you don't want her to have my baby?"
"Of Course not Corey! That's my damn cousin, my family member," I cried. He let out a chuckle. "Oh shut up, if you don't won't her to have it, I'll take care of it."
"How? It's done now," I snapped as I wiped my tears. As much as I despise the fact that she's pregnant by him, I would never guide her to an abortion because I know how it feels to lose a child.
He walked away and made his way to the bedroom. I followed behind him and watched as he stripped out of his shirt. "You been talking to ol' boy," he asked me. I already knew he was talking about Jigga.
I tried not to cry at the fact that we're no longer friends so that I don't have to suffer the consequences. "No," I replied sadly.
"Good."
As soon as my dad left back to the Military, Corey made his way back in my life with a gun, ready to control all aspects of it.
If I didn't allow him back, he said he would end my life and then his own. Out of fear, I let him back in.
That was one task down in his plans and the next was getting rid of Jigga. He forced me all the way to his house and made me break off our friendship.
Now that everything is done, I wish he would've just killed me because I rather have died than to see the pain that I saw in Jigga's eyes that day.
I let out a sigh before gathering my pajamas and heading for the bathroom. While I was in the shower, I began to cry hoping they wouldn't be heard by Corey.
I knew he would be upset that I'm crying behind him and I didn't feel like dealing with his devious ways tonight. I wish Jigga knew the truth behind why I did what I did.
After getting all cleaned up for the night, I headed back in the room with swollen red eyes and sadness. I tossed my dirty clothes away before climbing into bed next to Corey.
"You know I hate you right," I snapped him, getting comfortable on my side of the bed.
"Hate yourself bitch. You can't do shit right. You couldn't even keep a baby."
How dare he blame me for something I had no control over?
I covered my body up completely with the covers then turned my back to the enemy. Thoughts of my deceased baby girl popped up in my mind causing me to silently cry.
R.I.P my little angel. I'm sorry mommy failed you.
