Chapter One || Sophia Lucia’s POV
Published: 1st of July 2013.
***A/N I love Dance Moms so I thought I would attempt a fanfiction... I know there are a lot on here so it probably won't be read but you never know! I will update in short chapters often, rather than long chapters sometimes. That's the way I prefer to write, so please don't force me to update : ) I will update when I have time. Please remember to comment and vote. It would really mean a lot***

"Bye Soph!" Mom says, too brightly, holding her arms out for a hug. Aware that a lot of people are milling around the reception and are probably watching, I give her a self-conscious squeeze, my heart not really in it even though I know I probably won't see her again for at least a month.
I'm twelve now. If I'm old enough to go to a dance boarding school all on my own, I'm more than old enough not to need a hug goodbye. Mom kisses me on the forehead. I can smell her perfume, and I feel a lump come into my throat. I won’t cry. I won’t cry. I won’t cry.
"You're in dorm B," she tells me. "It's right at the top of the building. Can you manage with your suitcase and bags?"
I raise my eyebrows questioningly. I'm a dancer- I'm strong. I'm pretty sure I can carry a small dance bag, a rucksack and a suitcase up a couple of flights of stairs.
"Okay, okay," Mom smiles. "You're my super strong daughter with a six pack, I know. Look after yourself - I mean it - and train hard! And above all, have a good time!"
"I will, Mom. Love you."
"Love you too, honey. I'll see you at most competitions and in the holidays. Now off you go."
I wave and start lugging my stuff up the huge staircase leading to dorm B. I don't look back, knowing that my tears will probably spill over.

I knock on the door to my room, slightly nervous. There's a ton of noise coming from inside. I hope they'll hear me.
I have no idea who's going to be in it, but hopefully there'll be some people I know. I hope I get a big dorm. When we're on tour or at a competition, it's always much more fun to be in a big dorm. Less falling out and fewer problems, I've found.
The only thing I know is that there'll be no boys in the dorm, thank goodness, because otherwise it could get a bit awkward. There's a separate wing of the building for boys, and also a separate competition team.
All along the corridor there's screaming and laughing and girls chasing each other with pillows or having intense private discussions outside the dorm doors.
It looks like this could be a pretty exhausting place to spend the next year, but I think I'm ready for it.
The door to my dorm bursts open and I turn to see a familiar cheeky face grinning up at me. She's only ten, so she's super short. I lean down to give her a big hug.
"Asia! Hey, little diva! Are you in my dorm?"
"Uh huh!" she confirms. "Come on, we've all been waiting for you. We saved you the top bunk and the wardrobe space next to Chloe. Come ON!"
I laugh and let her excitedly drag me into the dorm. It is complete chaos. Paige's dance shorts and crop tops are strewn all over the floor, Brooke is having a heated conversation with Nick behind the wardrobe door (as if that will make us unable to hear what she's saying), and Nia and Kenzie are comparing flexibility by doing oversplits up against a wall. Ouch.
Looks like I am in a dorm with at least a FEW people I know!
They all look up when I come in and rush over to give me a group hug. Even Brooke casually hangs up on Nick and comes over.
"Hey guys!" I say. "How many of us are there in this dorm? It's huge!"
Chloe starts counting, but as usual Maddie takes charge. "All of us ALDC team," she says. "That's me, Nia, Chloe, Paige, Brooke, Kendall and Mackenzie. And then there's you and Asia."
"We're the Dance Moms girls," I laugh. Then I realise I'm still holding all my bags. "Can I put these down somewhere?" I ask.
"Sure!" Chloe says, and drags me over to a bunk bed. "This is mine," she says, gesturing to the top bunk. I can tell. It's covered in a pastel pink and blue duvet cover, a fluffy white throw and lots of cuddly toys. Chloe also obsessed with dream catchers and she's already got a pink one with tinkly bells hung up over where her head will be. The bed is so... Chloe.
"And this is yours," she continues. The bottom bunk bed is unmade, with just a bare mattress and a duvet without a cover. I chuck my bags onto it.
"Thanks Chlo!" I say. "Didn't you want to be with Paigey though?"
"I came late, and Paige was already with Maddie. She didn't even say hello to me," she says, slightly bitterly, which is unusual for Chloe, who's usually kind to everyone. I look around. Everyone is busy doing something. I can see that Paige and Maddie are closer than usual, whispering and laughing.
"Do you mind?" I ask.
"Not really..." she replies. "It's just... I'm going to really, REALLY miss my mom and Clara. I was counting on Paige to be there for me, because she's always been like my sister. She always saves me a bed or a seat. When we're on the coach, I'm always her partner. ON tour, I always sleep next to her in the dorm. But now yet another person prefers Maddie to me. I'm ALWAYS second best, even to a girl who's like my twin. Twinnies forever, that’s what we promised."
I give her a big hug. "I'm sure she'll come back to you soon enough," I say. "I can have a word with her if you want though?"
Chloe shakes her head, close to tears. "No, I think that's just asking for trouble. But thanks, Soph."
"Anyway, I'm sure she doesn't prefer Maddie to you! You've been best friends for years and years. It's probably just because they're both in the ADS competition team and they're excited about it," I say. Chloe frowns.
"What's that?" she asks.
"Ashwood Dance School competition team. The school competition team? You know? All of us in this dorm are in it, I think. I mean, I just skimmed over the list, but I think I saw all of our names."
"Oh right," she smiles. "Well done for getting in! I'm so glad I did. I'm sick of being pushed out of the way and this just shows that it doesn't have to be like that. Mom didn't mention it to me because we were so busy packing and stuff. Maybe she was trying to keep it a surprise."
Maddie calls to me across the noisy room. "Sophia, get your stuff packed away and your bed made! We've got a dorm tidiness check in about fifteen minutes. Paigey Mack! Clear your dance gear away."
I turn back to Chloe, hoping to continue the conversation, but her smile is gone.
"See?" she says. "Only me, Brooke and Kelly call Paige Paigey Mack. It’s a family thing. Or at least it was..."
