I must be the only person in this dorm who's actually TRYING to fall asleep. Chloe and Paige are sending each other secret signals across the dorm (I don't think there's any need to mention the fact that they're not including me), Maddie's texting or whatever, and Brooke's messing about with Mackenzie and Asia, having a tickling fight or something. They're going to be tired tomorrow. So am I, because they're keeping me awake.
Everyone's got something to do, but it's to dark to read or write like I would normally do if I couldn't sleep, and my phone is charging so I can't even text anyone.
I just lie there, staring at the ceiling in the dark, thinking.
Out of the blue, I remember what Chloe said about Kendall. I try to look over at her, but she's on the top bunk above Brooke so I can't see her. I wonder if, by any small chance, Chloe was right. I really should try talking to Kendall.
I should definitely talk to Chloe. She's tried to talk to me multiple times but I've ignored her while I've been thinking about what I could possibly say to her. It's not that I'm angry that she and Paige are friends again- that would be just plain mean.
I AM angry that I was obviously just a substitute or replacement friend, someone she could joke around and have fun with until she got her real friend back again.
That's what I want to tell Chloe, but I know that as soon as the words come out of my mouth they'll sound stupid.

The next morning, at breakfast, I'm standing in the queue to get cereal when I notice that Kendall's in front of me. Feeling like a weirdo, I decide to watch what she's eating. It's probably nothing serious, but I have to admit she does look unhappy.
"What kind of cereal, dear?" the lady behind the counter asks her kindly.
"Um... cornflakes please," Kendall replies.
It's a school rule that you have to have a bowl of cereal, and a piece of toast or a pastry, and fruit or yoghurt. They made the rule so that we keep strong and don't lose stamina or faint in dancing, but Kendall walks quickly past all the other counters of food and goes to sit down.
I take a bowl of Curiously Cinnamon, a croissant and some cherries, and follow her.
Brooke walks past with her friends Alexandra and Anna Rose, who were in the dorm I used to be in. Brooke has a bowl of Rice Krispies, Anna has Lucky Charms, and Alexandra has Coco Puffs. They wave at us. I wave back.
Then I turn to Kendall, who's picking half-heartedly at her cereal.
"Don't you like it?" I ask softly. She looks taken aback by my question, then shakes her head. "Do you want some of my croissant?" I ask. She shakes her head again. "Kendall, you've got to eat something," I insist. She shakes her head a third time. "Do you want some cherries?"
"Look, I'm fine!" she shouts, scraping her chair back. The dining hall's busy and noisy so her voice doesn't travel very far, but all the people on the surrounding tables turn to look, intrigued. I blush crimson. "You don't have to worry about me!" she carries on. "No one does. I don't matter, okay?"
"You do matter," I tell her, trying to grab her hand, but she won't listen. She rolls her eyes and walks off, her cheeks flushed red. Chloe, who has been staring wide eyed, goes up to her and tries to put an arm around her, but Kendall shrugs her off, so Chloe comes over to me, bewildered and slightly angry.
"What did you say to upset her?" she demands. I sink down to my seat again, and everyone who was watching turns back to their breakfasts. The drama's over - for them at least. Chloe sits down too, drumming her fingers on the table impatiently.
"I... I think you're right," I say eventually. "About Kendall."
Her eyes widen. "What are we going to do?"
