Chapter Thirty Eight || Sophia’s POV
Published: 8th October 2014
***A/N I really hope you enjoy this LAST CHAPTER! Stayed tuned for more… I will be posting about the sequel and some other awesome stuff! I’m feeling a bit emotional to have finished this book, but I promise there will be a sequel soon xoxo***
Today is recital day. It’s also the last day of semester. Tomorrow will be the summer holidays and we get to go home and see our families and go back to a normal life for a bit! I think I’m going to go back to San Diego Dance over the summer… I miss everyone there so much.
The weather isn’t very summery, considering it’s the start of vacation. It’s pouring with rain and sometimes it starts hailing, and I think the teachers are worried that our parents won’t be able to make it in time for our recital. It’s going to be a long one- we’re all performing our two best solos, chosen by Miss Kristina, and we’re also doing tons of group dances and duets. There’ll be awards and stuff too, afterwards.
Right now I’m in the dressing room, and it’s chaos. Everyone has a mirror and is swapping make up and stretching and zipping up each other’s costumes. Chloe and Paige are watching Make It Or Break It in the corner and giggling - their solos aren’t for a while. Autie, Maddie, Kendall and Nia are standing on each other’s japanas so they can stretch further. Asia and Kenzie are doing each other’s make up, and Brooke, Alexandra and Anna Rose are changing into their costumes in the other room. Mia’s standing by the door talking to Jack (he’s not allowed in because it’s a girls dressing room). He says something to her and she laughs, and then he kisses her quickly. I can see her blush from across the room. When he’s left she bounces over to me and says excitedly,
“Did you see that?!”
I laugh and nod, and Jenna, who’s using the mirror beside me, wolf-whistles.
“He’s cuuute,” she tells Mia, and I nod my agreement. Jack’s really sweet, and he’s an amazing dancer. Him and Mia are in the process of begging Miss Kristina to have a duet together next year.
Miss Kristina is currently looking around the door and calling, “Five minutes, guys!” We all rush to finish getting into our costumes before the good luck and goodbye speech that we’re probably going to get backstage.
I adjust my flower wreath (for my solo Dream) and take a deep breath.
The rest of the day goes in a blur. My mom comes, and I give her a huge hug and tell her how much I’ve missed her. Everyone emotionally reunites with their family before we’re all called backstage for the inevitable speech.
We start on the solos… halfway through the power goes out and we have to have a break because the stage lights aren’t working… the power comes back on and we move on to the groups. The stage starts to feel like home and I’m in my element, leaping and turning and knowing that I won’t fall… that I’m in control.
We perform Dark Paradise again and it goes without a hitch this time. Kendall’s glowing the whole way through, obviously as happy as I am. Kendall and I watch from backstage as Paige and Chloe and Autumn do that incredibly moving trio, Stand In The Rain, and even in the dim backstage light, I can see tears of happiness in her eyes… that this has all worked out, that she doesn’t have to worry about anything anymore.
Next comes the awards, and we nearly all get one. I get one for hard work and strong stage presence, and I stand up to receive it amidst deafening applause. Kendall gets one for most improved, and you can see how much it means to her just by looking at her face. The award ceremony goes on for a long time, and then we all go backstage to take off our costumes.
Ashwood is starting to feel like my home, and I know that it’s going to be hard to leave it. I pack up all my stuff and meet my mom out front, standing right where I was when I saw this place for the first time and decided that it was going to be a great year. I stand staring up at the carpeted staircase, watching people drag their suitcases down it, and Mom stands beside me, knowing that it’s hard for me to say goodbye.
“You’ll be back sooner than you think,” she tells me. “You need a holiday, and then you’ll be back, to start a new year.”
I nod and smile, knowing she’s right, and hug Chloe and Paige goodbye as they go past with their families. Mia’s next, and me and her do our handshake and promise each other we’ll see each other over the vacation. Soon the hallway’s almost empty, and I know it’s time to leave.
Mom and I smile at each other, and then we pick up my bags and go outside into the rain to the car. We dump everything in the trunk and then I buckle myself in and roll down the window to say goodbye to the last few people, knowing that it will be a new year by the time I next see some of them. Mom starts the car, the engine grumbling and sputtering in the heavy rain, and we drive out of the car park. I keep my eyes on the school building, on the field and the studios and the picnic tables, the places where I’ve made so many memories, until they’re almost completely screened by trees, and I have to look away. I look out of the front window, and I see a ray of sunshine, bursting through the clouds at the end of the road. As I watch, a faint rainbow is formed, growing bolder as we drive towards it. When I turn around at last, Ashwood Dance School is just a speck on the horizon.
