Our coach, Kristina, is giving out solos and groups to the competition team based on our performances during the entry audition to this school. I did tons of tricks in my audition (Abby choreographed my routine), so if I get a solo it will definitely be acro as usual. Sigh.
Maddie, of course, has a lyrical solo.
I have an acro solo to a piece of music called ‘Saola (Beat Connection)’. I love the music already.
Asia has an upbeat, high energy solo called ‘So What, I’m Still A Rockstar’.
Paige and Autumn have a duet to Diamonds by Rihanna.
There is a large group dance that includes all of us, to Dark Paradise by Lana Del Rey.
We’ll be competing at Starpower in Pennsylvania, so of course Abby and her replacement team will be there. I feel bad going up against Abby, because she always forgave me for things and had at times been like a mother to me. She did say horrible things to me sometimes though, so it doesn’t feel that bad. Part of me really hopes we’ll beat her replacement team, to show that we’re not replaceable, as she always told us we were. I bet Maddie feels bad being against her though, since Abby was always so supportive of her.
Miss Kristina claps her hands. “Quiet, girls!” She shouts. We all shut up immediately. We respect her, rather than fear her like we feared Abby.
“It seems like one of us is cutting class today, which is why I didn’t read out her solo.” We look around blankly. Everyone who was on the list is here. “Does anyone know where Chloe Lukasiak is? Is she ill?"
“Chloe?” Paige squeaks.
“Yes, is she here?” Miss Kristina looks cross. “It’s really not on to cut classes, especially on the first day. I’ve got half a mind to take her off the competition team.”
“She’s not cutting, Miss Kristina,” I say, the first to speak up. Everyone else is too surprised. “Her name wasn’t on any of the lists. She’s been really upset that she wasn't on the team.”
“Oh gosh,” Miss Kristina says, “we must’ve left her name off by accident! Brooke, go and find her. They’re probably in Studio C. How truly awful for her!” I’m halfway out of the door when she shouts after me. “And tell her that her solo’s called Jar Of Hearts!”
I rush out of the studio and down the corridor to Studio C, where the junior hiphop class are. They’re in a line being taught a simple move which Chloe has known since she was about four. She looks totally bored to death.
I knock politely on the door and say, “Can I have Chloe Lukasiak please? She won’t be in this class anymore.”
“Thank goodness!” the coach exclaims. “I feel like I don’t have much to teach her. Goodbye, Chloe.” Chloe grabs her water bottle and comes out of the door with me, her face ashen pale.
“What have I done wrong? Am I being expelled?” she demands.
“Of course not!” I say. “You’re in the competition team! They had made a mistake on the list and missed you off.”
“Really?” she beams. “I’m on it?”
“Yep, and we’re doing solos right now, so you’d better get a move on. Oh, and you might want to apologise to Paige.”
