Chapter Eighteen || Autumn's POV
Published: 13th of October 2013.
***A/N Entering this for the Watty Awards once it reaches 30 pages (required number) Wish me luck! I can't believe this story is less than 30 pages still! It's taken me much longer to write it than it took me to write a 256 page novel :P School gets in the way of everything. It's ridiculous the amount of HW we get when we're only 13! It's like 2 hours a night :O***

When I wake up, it's still dark. The duvet that covered me has been pushed back. Everyone in the dorm is fast asleep. I rub my eyes, push my messy hair out of my face and sit up, nearly banging my head on the ceiling. Why am I in a top bunk? I think sleepily, before remembering that Paige invited us all up last night.
I pull out my phone from under my pillow and smile at my lock screen. It's a selfie of me, Paige, and Chloe in our costumes before the competition. Chloe is in the middle in her cool misty grey costume and Paige and I are glittering on either side of her, making stupid duck faces.
The time is 2:30 AM. I groan. Why did I have to wake up now? I'll never be able to get back to sleep. I'm about to settle down to check Twitter when I realise that someone else must be awake, because there's only three people in the bed.
It's Kendall. She's not there. The plushie that Paige lent her is placed carefully on Paige's pillow.
I shine my phone across the dorm. Mackenzie's sucking her thumb in her sleep. Nia's about to fall out of bed. Everyone is still in their beds and asleep though... and Kendall is nowhere to be seen.
I sigh and rub my eyes again sleepily. I'll have to go and look for her. I debate with myself about waking up Chloe or Paige, but decide not to. If I was in their position, I would want to sleep.
I jump off the bunk bed and walk quickly to the door. It's slightly ajar. I look up and down the silent dark corridor. No Kendall. I check the bathrooms. She's not there either. My heart starts to thump. This is a huge school. She could be anywhere.
I run down the huge staircase as quickly and quietly as I can, grasping the cold wooden banister. I'm about to make straight for my old dorm where Brooke is spending the night when a teacher walks down the corridor.
She obviously hears something from inside their dorm because she creeps up to it like a ninja and then quickly opens the door, probably hoping to catch them awake. I cover my mouth so I don't laugh. It's funny what teachers do when they think you can't see them.
It's dark inside the dorm. Everyone's asleep. The teacher gives up and turns to go down the stairs. I press myself up against the banister, heart thumping, barely breathing, wondering what will happen if I get caught. I don't- she carries on going down the stairs, opens a door and walks in. The door shuts behind her.
I wait an excruitiating ten seconds, then run across to Brooke's dorm.
To be honest, I had been hoping they would have the light on or at least be awake. It would make what I'm about to do a whole lot easier. I open the door a crack and hear lots of rustling. Probably someone turning over in their sleep.
I turn my phone on and walk into the dorm. Everyone is completely fast asleep. I walk past four beds before I get to three single beds pushed together that Brooke, Anna Rose and Alexandra are sharing.
"Brooke?" I whisper, then twenty phones are turned on and twenty pairs of eyes glimmer as they point the phones straight at me. I squeak in surprise.
"Autie?" Brooke giggles. I turn and face her and the other two in her bed. Someone else is asleep, face down.
"Were you fake sleeping?" I ask grumpily. "You nearly gave me a heart attack!"
"We thought you were that teacher again," Brooke explains in a whisper. "What is it?"
"Can I talk to you privately?" I ask pointedly. Everyone around me starts talking and laughing as soon as I say that. They know the drill.
"Sure," Brooke says, and motions for me to sit down. Anna Rose, Alexandra and Brooke wait for me to start speaking.
"Do you promise that if I tell you something you won't tell a single person? It's not my secret to tell, it's someone else's."
"We promise," they whisper, and I can tell that none of them are going to say anything about what I'm about to tell them. I trust them.
"This is about Kendall, right?" Alexandra says suddenly. I look at her, wide eyed.
"It's impossible not to see it," Brooke says. "Unless you're decieving yourself like Kendall is. She never eats anything. She's stick thin."
"Well, that saves you telling you one thing, I guess. But basically, Kendall's left our dorm and I'm really really worried about where she could be."
"Well, we can solve that problem pretty easily," Anna says, lifting the blanket on the sleeping girl. It's Kendall.
"Oh thank goodness," I say, relieved. "Do you know why she came down here? What did she say to you?"
"Nothing," Brooke says. "She just came over and fell straight asleep. I get the impression from what she's been saying in her sleep though, that she feels like she's not good enough for you."
"That's rubbish. Of course she is. Wait, she talks in her sleep?"
"Constantly," Alexandra tells me.
"Autie, can I tell you something?" Brooke asks. "Since you were going to share your secret with us, I need to tell you one back."
"You don't need to."
"I want to," she insists.
"Okay...?"
"It's about Nick... and Maddie."
********
I go back up to the dorm with a barely awake Kendall. It's nearly four by the time we leave. We climb up to Paige's bed and Kendall goes straight to sleep.
I stay awake until six, thinking. Chloe has told me all about Nick and Brooke's relationship. She says that they argued constantly, and that nearly every problem was caused by Nick.
And now Brooke's told me that Maddie is Nick's mystery crush, everything I've seen between them falls into place. I would say that they'd make a cute couple, but three thing stop me.
1) Nick sounds like he can be pretty mean, and I don't want Maddie to get her heart broken.
2) Interschool relationships are completely forbidden. The penalty is expulsion.
3) Recently, Brooke has seen Nick hanging around with some girl in the year above called Kayla, which means it could get nasty for Maddie if she finds out that Nick likes Maddie.
Why do I get the feeling this is going to end badly, I wonder?
