"You did good kid!" Mr. Harvey said, giving me a swift hard pat on my back. I nodded his way and left as soon as I could.
I am very late and I know that a lot of people might get very impatient by now. My 'behind-the-scenes' job makes it hard for me to fish out the time for my usual weekend routine. But I've still got to hold on to it.
I got in my car and that's when I heard my phone ring...
Darn it! I think its Megan... I took my phone expecting to see her name written across the screen. No, it wasn't her... Phew! Being interrogated by her is no joke! The number wasn't familiar so I sent a busy tone. I was on the road when it rung again. And then again. I stopped the car and thought I'd have to take this one. Seemed quite urgent anyway.
I answered, " Hello..." I could here someone breathing heavily but no one spoke and just as I was about to hang up, the person spoke up, "Its me Faw... Erm, Bluebell." Oh finally! She decided to call huh?
"Hey Blue, whadup?"
"Are you free"
"Yes I am!" Why did I lie again?
"I... Er... I'm a little lost. Could you_"
"I'll pick you up. Well, if you're still in Glade... Where are you anyway?"
"The board here says Sliver street_ oh I'm at the café near the gas station"
"On my way!"••••••
Sliver street was only five minutes away. I parked my car and I saw her sitting in the coffee shop. She was fiddling with an empty glass and seemed sort of worried. Well she isn't lost anymore.
"Hey, Blue!" I called out. She lifted her face and it lit up with that smile that I'd always liked. She skipped over to my side and patted my shoulder looking up at me. Here she was after three years, standing right in front of me...
Is this real?....
Snap out of it!
"Let's get you home!" I blurted, slipping my hands into my jeans' pockets. I proceeded towards my car and she walked along.
"I'm so glad you could help! Thanks a a ton!"
"Carter's always at your service!" I said, all dramatically.
I think I heard a slight giggle. I opened the passenger door for her, gesturing toward the seat. She got in and I shut the door.
Once I was behind the steering wheel, I turned to Blue.
"Where to?"
She looked around in thought, "Mmmm... Skippy?"
"Sure!"
"Thank you so much! I think I would be spending the night at the café if it weren't for you!"
"Seeing that you're new here, you can count on me, alright?" I caught a glance of her nodding from the corner of my eye.
"Well, I have visited here a couple of times."
"So you've settled here for..." I switched lanes and tried to keep my eyes on the road as she spoke.
"College_ Glade U. I moved in to my sister's place."
"Oh, I'm a junior in Glade U!"
"Cool!"
Some music started playing out of nowhere_ hold up! Did the radio start playing on its own?
It was just her phone!
She spoke for about five minutes.
"My sister_ she called to tell me she's back home. Erm_ I need you to do me another tiny favor..."
"Go ahead..."
"I need you to keep this_", she paused for a second, holding the plastic bag that I'd seen her carrying.
"My sister wont let me keep it."
"Because?...."
"Its junk food. I don't think I'll be able to sneak it past her. She's really strict when it comes to my clean eating."
"Oh... That's sad. "
"She was running a few errands, so I decided to getaway and find some proper food!"
"So, is she the fitness trainer at Skippy?"
"How did you know?"
"Well_ I assume your sister's a fitness freak. My friend goes to Skippy every once in a while. And another reason_ there aren't a lot of houses around that area." As I turned a corner I figured out we were almost there.
" Yep its pretty much just tall buildings and offices....
Not much of a view out there!"
I stopped the car in front of the building. She opened the door and got off, "Thanks again!" She said handing me the bag which I placed on the dash board.
"Its nothing! You could always call me if you need anything. Kay?"
"Sure, I will! Bye!"
"Seeya!"
She waved, still smiling, ran out to the big neat turf and disappeared around the corner. At the end of the day I couldn't spend the evening with my people but at least I can give them a reasonable explanation for why I blew them off this time.
