I've only had a wattpad account for 2 days and this story already has more than 5 reads! I know it's not much but I wasn't expecting more than 2 people to read it in the first month. So pleased thanks to every one for reading and please comment, it's really helpful. Now, the story...
***My mother has made breakfast downstairs. It's just bread and cheese. District 12 might be richer now but my family still only has treats occasionally. We are saving for a 'rainy day'. That's fine but surely the reaping day feast deserves a treat?
After breakfast I have a bath and get dressed. I put on one of my nicest dresses, a grey-blue one with a white ribbon bow around the waist and a longer back than front. It's from District 8. I got it last reaping day. Every day each district has a stall in the sqaure. This is the same in every disrict. But we only buy dresses to look nice in the hour before the feast. It's kind of A family tradition that's only broken if there is a wedding or important birthday.
My mother comes up to do my hair. She does it in a braid thats become a traditional hairstyle in the districts, especially 12. It's the braid Katniss Everdeen wore at her first reaping. Almost every mother knows it and their daughters learn it. We see her and Peeta and their children around town. Curious little children have to be kept away by their mothers but older children are taught to treat them as normal people and respect their wish to remain inconspicuous .Well as inconspicuos as you can be after winning two hunger games. And doing all that stuff in the rebellion.
An hour later I'm in the middle of a dance when I see some of the kids from school. I groan. These are not people I want to see.
"Hey Hazel, trying a new skill?" the tallest girl, Joan, says.I raise an eyebrow. Being nice? This is uncharacteristic of my peers.
"Are you branching out?"
Her entourage of giggling followers laugh. It's not my fault I'm called Hazel Conifer. But I'm used to the laughing now. I blush and retort
"At least I have skills. More than you can say."
Luckily, this shockes them for long enough for me to disappear into the crowd before I had to face Joan's wrath. The rest of the morning goes well. I bought some cookies from the new bakery and a bunch of berries from district 11. I'm browsing through a selection of coloured lights from 8 when something on district 1's stall catches my eye. It's a beautiful necklace with a tiny tree pendant. On the tree are tiny rubies that look like berries or fruit. The owner of the stall sees me looking. I step back, worried she thinks I'm going to take something.
"Go on, have it" she says. I look at her not believing it.
"Me?"
"No, the grass. Of course I'm talking to you"
I put it on. It fits perfectly and can be hidden under my dress.
" Thank you so much. Here," I give her my berries "This is for you" She smiles and I literally dance away thrilled with my luck. There is only a minute left until midnight and I can't see my mother anywhere. I keep looking until I hear the countdown to 00:00.
"10, 9.."
Why do the silence at night. It's impossible to find anyone.
"...7,6 .."
Coloured lights are shining in every direction blinding me in my panic to find my mother.
" 3, 2..."
Oh I'm sure it will be fine, I'll go home after the silence and find her.
" 1, 0"
As the crowd shouts 0 there is a burst of static everything is thrown into darkness. There is not a minute of silence. There is a minute of screaming and panic. Then the lights go back on. There are reaping balls on the stage and a giant screen showing Katniss and her family tied up. I can only think one thought.
"What on earth is going on?"Mwah ha ha I will end it here. Next chapter=excitement.
