After 3 hours, I know how to build a fire, how to light said fire, I can sharpen a twig or stone, I can tie a basic snare and I am starving. So I'm relieved when a games maker calls for lunch.
We file into a smaller room and I claim a small table while Meir gets his lunch. I sit down and hear a small voice next to me, asking if she can sit here. I tell her she can and a small girl with brown hair and eyes the colour of leaves in the height of summer. She is so small and fragile, I can't believe she's in the games.
"How old are you?" I ask as Meir comes back with a plateful of good for me.
"12. And I'm from district 7. And my name is Emily" she smiles at me, but it fades when she sees the years rolling down my cheek. "Sorry, did I do something wrong?" She looks so hurt, "I was only trying to help"I barely feel Meir's hand on my shoulder. I can't hear her words of enquiry and comfort. I am back in district 12, seven years ago, in the woods with my mother, and my sister, Emily. It was a few days after the summer solstice and we were walking around the woods, picking berries for a cake that would never be baked. My mother gave 5 year-old Emily a branch to strip the berries from while we tackled the higher boughs. When we looked down a minute or so later, Emily was gone. We called for her. We searched the woods for an agonising half an hour before we heard it. A scream. A child's scream. Then the thundering of thousands of hooves.
We ran. We hurdled logs and and dodged trees like professional athletes. At last we saw a five-year-old size lump, moaning in agony.
Me and mother kneeled by her and she looked at my mother with a sense of urgency she said
" Am I going..." she breathed a raspy breath "... to Daddy?" My mother nodded, tears creating rivers down her face. She smiled and looked at me. " Goodbye." That was the last hing she said. I meant in to kiss her and while my lips were on her forehead, she went limp. I knew she was gone but mother kept shaking her screaming for her to wake up. I was screaming too, telling my mother she was gone, asking her to stop. Eventually she understood and missed Emily before sinking to the ground sobbing. I picked up Emily's lifeless form and shut her eyes. I could always carry her but that day it was easy, in hindsight it was probably adreneline that helped me get her back to the town, but at the time I thought it was Emily's spirit, helping me one last time.Sorry this chapter is so short. I am trying to get back to the chapter plan I made. I'll do a double update next Wednesday to make up for it :) :)
