Before you all kill me, I'm sorry for not updating. First of all we went to see the fluffball up there ⬆ ^. 17 days till he comes home. (His name is Oswin for any whovians out there). Then when we go home the internet wasn't working :( so I decided to wait and update today instead. I hope it's worth the wait!
EVERYTHING BEFORETHIS IS AN AUTHOR'S NOTE I JUST FORGOT TO PUT IT IN BOLD. EVERYTHING AFTER THIS (UNTIL THE NOTE AT THE END - IN BOLD) IS THE THE STORY. NOW YOU KNOW. :) :) :) :) :)"What's happening?"
Lepus was speedily dismantling our base, balancing bags on his shoulder and shoving food into sleeping bags."What's happening?" I repeat. Lepus's sudden apparition and unexplained warning scared me, I was as ready he leave as he was, but I had Meir to look after. He was still very weak, though clean now at least, and there was no way we could leave him behind. Sure I could hide him in a bush, run and hope for the best, but what if he was found? It would take more than being in a bush to hide from the career-by- genetics. Hunting is in their insticts and murder us second nature. And if they discovered him he'd be completely defenceless . No. Hiding him in a bush is not the best idea.
"Washing Meir was necessary, I get that, but did you have to clean him in the river? I'm mean, get some common sense Hazel! All that blood that you washed off him has spread down the river. The careers will find us easily. You might as well have left a trail of breadcrumbs, or a map!"
" At least he's alive!" I reason, exasperated.
"For now," Lepus counters, " What happens when the careers come? What happens when night comes?"
I want to cry with frustration.
" We will solves those problems when we come to them. But we aren't even gonna get to night if we don't do something. I can't leave Meir. We need to hide. We need to get up a tree . Now if you can help me get him" I glance at Meir, " Up that tree," I say, immediately seeing the perfect tree with my trained eyes,
"His odds of surviving will increase greatly"Lepus stares at me and I, unflinching, stare back. Eventually he breaks the silence.
"Give me some rope..."
Half an hour later, by the sun, Meir and I are sitting against a tree trunk, 30 metres in the air, watching Lepus run east, again by the sun, and blend in with the trees until he is swallowed by the forest. Lepus had made a kind of lift to pull Meir up and I made a secure platform with plastic and other supplies that I found in the bags.
As soon as Meir was up we divided the supplies and after a brief goodbye, he left.Me and Meir have the spears, two swords, a sleeping bag each, all the medical equipment except from one pack (which Lepus has) and other assorted survival essentials that I can't be bothered to go through. Instead I start the tedious job of making our sleeping area invisible, or at least unnoticeable. I twist branches and thread leaves until we are just part of the endless canopy. As absorbed in my work as i am, I don't even notice that it gets dark until the anthem plays and a light flickers over head. I scramble up to where Meir sits.
Faces and numbers flash by, more than half of the tributes who came in here today have already escaped. They are on their way home, in stiff wooden boxes, no thoughts clouding their minds, no knowledge of the greif that must be unfolding at their respective districts. I hold my breath all the way through, though I'm not sure who it's for until she dosen't show up. A young face flashes in my mind, but not on the screen. Emily. Not my sister, but close enough. I'm not sure I could handle it if she died. It's over for today. But who knows how many cannons will sound before the next time we hear the anthem? And whose faces will appear during it?
I look at Meir, he is already asleep, exausted from healing himself. He looks so weak while sleeping, too pale and covered in bruises. Suddenly I'm afraid he isn't going to wake up. I'm tempted to wake him, just to make certain I can, but then I don't. I have no idea what tommorrow will bring. I need him as strong as possible.
The darkness grows and stars appear in the sky. It's so beautiful, it's hard to believe people were killed here. Hours later, just as my eyes begin to drop, as I contemplate sleep, I hear a snap. A twig. I see a beam of light sweep through trees. A flashlight. It must be the careers. No one else is as well stocked.
And they are coming towards us.
They move closer.
And closer.
And closer.
And I can't breathe.
HEY BROTHER THERE'S AN ENDLESS ROAD TO REDISCOVER! Um anyway
