Hi guys! Please read the author's note at the end! Thanks!
"Are you ok?" Meir asks, holding me tightly.
" I'm fine," I reasure him, "I'm fine!"
He looks at me uncertainly but dosen't question my self-evaluation. I stretch watch the last of the sunlight filter through the trees, causing them to glow a soft orange. It's strange how the world can still be beautiful in a fight to the death.I sit up and reach for my backpack. Meir gets there quicker and
holds it teasingly above my head. I reach up and pluck it from his outstretched arms and feel around for the water bottle. I shake it and hear just a slight tinkle against the cool metal.
"We're running low. We'll have to get more before we leave," I pass the bottle to Meir who takes a sip before giving it back. " Shouldn't be long now should it?" I say spotting at the darkness creeping in. I know I'll have to get up in a minute, but first I just lean against Meir, feeling the consistent rise and fall of his chest. We both do nothing, just letting the world go on without us, and for some reason it suddenly dawns on me that there are cameras watching our every movement. Of course, we might not be on TV right now, but unless there's a nice fight going on, it's probably us. What's more intresting than a sweet romantic moment between two doomed tributes? I feel a spark of anger light up inside me. This is our moment. It is for us. Not the capitol. Or the district's. Though the latter is by far the lesser evil."Excuse me, dear people of the Capitol," I how's through my teeth, " but our lives belong to us, you can take our houses and jobs and money and food and...whatever you want I guess. But you can't take our thoughts or emotions. So if you could kindly stop pointing your cameras at us and give us some privacy I would be most pleased,"
"What on earth...?" Meir asked, his face crinkled with lines of confusion.
" Just trying something. Might be dead tommorrow, if there's a time to try things, it's now." Meir looked at me, soft eyes melting my own stony face.
" You won't be dead tommorrow, I won't let that happen. Just don't make my job any harder than it already is.""And if you die ?"
"At least we'll be together," Meir plasters on a smile, " Come on, let's wake the others before the anthem plays!"
Emily is a light sleeper and Lepus is immediately alert, so it dosen't take long to get them helping us pack away. I shove the ropes and plastic back into my bag then assist the boys in making it look like we are never here. Emily is down at the river, getting us some more water.
"So you and Meir seem pretty cosy," Lepus says with a wink.
"Oh, shut up," I scold him, though I'm laughing inside.
" I reckon he's just jealous," Meir teases Lepus. He kisses me on the forehead, "Well have to find him someone,"
"What about Emily?" I say jokingly.
" Yeah buts she kinda the wrong.."
"- if you say type I swear I will murder you," (And as I had a knife in my hand this was quite a threat.)
"No, she's the wrong...gender,"
Everyone pauses for a second before Meir remarks, "These goddamn picky people. Why must they choose just one gender to like? Kinda a mistake God! What is the point in genders. Just let anyone make a baby with anyone. Evolution you suck. "Congratulations Meir Aster, you have offically reached Peeta Mellark levels of always knowing what to say.
Ok so a bit of a filler chapter tbh. I hope you accept my 555 the to bring more diversity into my story, though if you don't that's your problem not mine. :)
Anyway, if you haven't already please go over to my " about the author" book and look for the #humanssuck page. Take the challenge and make #humanssuck
