He's behind me.

I can hear the footsteps and see a shadow on the trees.I spin around, Knife in hand, and throw it where I know two ribs split leaving his heart undefended. It goes right where it should, just like always.

The boy shatters into a trillon tiny fragments that stay suspended in midair for a few miliseconds before dissolving into nothing with the rest of the holographic scenery. I can breathe again as the forest disappears and leaves me standing in an empty, grey room. I slot my knife into one of the metal racks and walk out the door to where Meir stands, waiting for me.

"How were your first few minutes of the games?" He enquires, fiddling with the string of a bow. I shrug. I had killed all of the simulated adversaries, which is no easy task, but I'm not sure if I should tell him that. He is my competition after all, so letting him know I'm a potential threat isn't exactly good tactics. But then, it might make him want to stay with me in the games, as allies, of course. Who would want to ally with someone who couldn't survive?

"I did okay," I answer, modestly, "but they were only simulations"

"I bet you did better than me," Meir admits, intensly facinated with his top, "I probably would survive give minutes"

I can't tell if he is telling the truth or not and there is a lengthy and uncomfortably silence between us which is eventually broken by voice behind us.

" Ah well, who would want to win now? Of course, the whole not dying in the games thing is pretty sweet, but all past winners arn't doing too well now. Murdered or locked up with their children dead and at the complete mercy of the Capitol. Not a partically favourable future I must admit. I'm Lepus, by the way."

A tall boy with short blonde hair and peircing green eyes stands before me, arm out stretched. Lepus. I think I remember his reaping. He's from district 3 and there was a small girl trying to run after him, but was firmly escorted back by guards. I can't recall his chariot outfit or his district partner. I intently stare at his hand, offering greeting, as if it could tell me who he is. After a second or two he stage whispers,
"You're supposed to shake it,"

I laugh a little too loudly and quickly grasp his hand.

"Hazel," I offer, " and this is Meir" as my partner exchanges hands with Lepus.

"Oh, I know who you are, " Lepus grins, " You're miniature Katniss Everdeen. In fact, I'm beginning to think it's not a coincidence."

"It's beginning to not be"

" Really?" He looks at me and Meir "Well since our old one is incarcerated you might as well fill the gap. You've already got yourself a 'Peeta'" He jerks his head at Meir.

Me and Meir look at each other and share a blush.
"We aren't together" Meir explains, too quickly.
"Yet, You aren't together yet." Lepus smiles smugly "What is it with 12 and star-crossed lovers"
I'm fairly sure I'm as red as Aidi's wine by this point so I'm relieved when Meir asks me if I want to practise fire building. We say goodbye to Lepus and make our way across the hall.

"So what do you think about that conversation?" Meir asks lighting a match over his perfected campfire. I know he means about us, but I don't want to say anything.
"Lepus seemed... nice," I try. Meir gives me a patronising look.
"Ok...he was a little irksome"
"I meant about us. Together. What do you think?"

His tone is pleading. I don't know what to say. He's only ever been sweet and charming, but I only met him a few days ago. I'm not sure if he is ready to know how I feel. I don't know if I'm ready to know how I feel.
" Pass me the flint, please," I ask, playing for time. He sighs.
" It's right next to you" Perhaps I should work on better quick thinking "Stop procrastinating. I just want to know if you'll ever think of me in that way," I stare into his eyes. The answer comes to me immediately, but I don't say it straight away, partially because I want to make sure it's right, deliberating and rethinking. Partially so I have an excuse to lose myself in his beautiful eyes.

"The odds are definitely in our favour"
