A few hours later, Sophie emerged from the stateroom with puffy red eyes but she was determined to speak to Jim. She had to tell him that she believed him – there was no way that she believed Mr Arrow's death to be nothing but an accident. Maybe she was too forgiving but she hadn't given Jim a chance to explain himself as she had run off. Minutes of searching later, she found him in the galley alone – eating the soup Silver had made, thought it had hardly been touched. "Jim?" She called, her voice failing her a little, slowly he looked up – a blank look on his face.
"Look, if you want to talk about what happened then I don't want to hear it." He responded, it stung Sophie a little – did he not care about how she felt? Maybe that kiss on the cheek had meant nothing to him, she looked at him with an open mouth which seemed to annoy him. "I don't need you to patronise me." He spoke coldly, Sophie regained her composure – during her time on this voyage, a fire had been awakened in her which was now burning wildly. "I just came down here to say that I believed it was an accident! I didn't come here to pat your back or mother you Jim! At least you have your mother, I have only Amelia. Stop thinking about yourself-" She ranted, her cheeks burning red – rarely, if ever, raising her voice to someone.
Jim had angrily stood up and marched towards the blonde with an intense anger in his eyes, "Think about myself?! I've been thinking about how you and the Captain felt! I planned to stay out of the way for the rest of this voyage if that's what made dealing with his death easier!" Jim shouted back, Sophie's lip trembled as she looked down – she was never dynamic in arguments, more someone that made a one line comment and that was the end of it. "I wanted to make my mother proud, I promised I'd make her proud but how can I do that when I have killed someone!" He added, his chest heaving as he caught his breath. Sophie breathed out of her nose and stepped away from Jim, hands out in front of her, "Fine, whatever you want. Accidents happen Jim, being a sailor means you have to deal with death almost every day and if this is how you react then maybe you shouldn't be one." Sophie spoke softly, she refused to look at Jim – who furrowed his eyebrows in anger, how dare she say give up on his dream! He opened his mouth to retort but stopped once he heard the soft but supressed sobs of the girl he had grown to care about with his entire being. "But... I believe in you, I always have Jim. You're stronger than I'll ever be and I... I admired that about you..." Her statement tugged at his heart, he regretted shouting at her in the first place – she admired him?! Someone that was out of his league admired a poor kitchen boy like him? His head won over his heart, she was just patronising him – making him feel wanted then she'd throw him aside as soon as the voyage ended. "Or did you just feel sorry for me? You may read a lot of books but you nothing about me or people." He spat coldly, pushing by her as she bowed her head further down as she cried – not understanding what went wrong in the first place.
Sophie forgot she was supposed to be on night watch, she had spent time in the galley eating her dinner though it was becoming diluted with her tears. Morph flew into the galley chattering to himself happily but stopped once he saw a favourite companion of his in tears. Sophie heard him and gave a small smile to the creature, who seemed to be more worried and nuzzled her cheek which made Sophie giggle a little. "I'm alright, Morph. It's just been a tough day." She assured using her finger to tickle her pink friend. Morph wittered around the blonde until she had finished her food and tidied up after herself, engrossed in her cleaning she hadn't noticed Morph fly off somewhere else."Morphy! I was wonderin' where ye laid off to." Silver greeted, he was on the night watch but was more interested in smoking his pipe when his companion fluttered around his head chattering in a worried tone. The small creature morphed into Sophie in a crying position then returned to his usual state, Silver raised an eyebrow – feeling worried for the blonde teenager and from the way Jim had stormed out of the galley earlier, the pair seemed to have had a fight. The cyborg looked between Morph and Jim, who was sitting in the shrouds with a dark expression on his features. "Take me to her Morph." Silver commanded before following the creature into the galley, there he found Sophie cleaning the pots and pans with a sniff every now and then. "Soph." Silver spoke, it startled the blonde as her head snapped up and she dropped the heavy pot onto her foot. In her panicked state she stood up and desperately tried to pick the pot up only to lose her balance and fall into another one. Silver chuckled a little and helped the poor girl out of her predicament, "Are you alright, lass?" He asked, concern lacing his features. "Yes! I-I'm fine!" She responded quickly, wiping her clothes down before trying to fix her unruly hair. "You had a fight with Jimbo." Silver spoke after a few minutes, Sophie stopped short of tying her hair up, her movements slowing down as she placed her hands by her side as she stared at her boots. "How'd you know?" She asked quietly, embarrassed and ashamed. "I know a lot of things lass, I know that Jimbo feels that Mr Arrow's death was his fault and he was worried about ye." Silver spoke calmly, sitting on one of the benches. The blonde bit her lip, the cyborg was more than likely right. "I don't know what I did wrong, Silver. Maybe I am just an annoying bookworm who knows nothing about people. All I seem to do is irritate people, maybe I shouldn't have friends." She shrugged, her voice sounding utterly defeated. Silver frowned, wondering what Jim had said exactly to make her think herself as unworthy of friends, and stood up to grasp her shoulder with his flesh arm and bent down to her height.
"Never let me hear ye say that about yourself Sophie Pennant. You are the sweetest lass who tries to do the right thing for everyone else. If people can't see how caring ye are then it is they who don't deserve friends." He spoke, his mechanical eye shining as brightly as his real one, Sophie nodded with a sniff – not even Mr Arrow had spoken to her like this and it made her feel like she had a father again. "But Jim said-" Sophie began to argue when Silver interrupted, not harshly but in a caring but firm way. "Never mind what Jimbo says! I say that ye are that ye make me proud with everything that ye do! Never have I seen a lass as determined as you so whenever you feel worthless then know I've got yer back and don't you forget it." Sophie nodded, tears flowing from her eyes but instead of a sad expression, she smiled. "Now, off to bed with ye. I have to talk to Jimbo and teach him how to talk to a lady!" Silver announced, walking Sophie up the galley stairs and guiding her towards the stateroom, before she stepped in the room she turned to face Silver with a small grin, mouthing 'thank you' before entering the room and closing the door behind her. Morph cuddled his master's cheek with an excited chatter, "Oh Morphy... what would the crew think?" He mumbled with a worried expression before breaking into a smile, "Ah, to the Eitherium with them!"The cyborg grinned, unaware of Mr Scroop watching from the shrouds – his attention now directed onto Jim who hadn't moved. How soft had Silver become around those kids? Scroop had to find out.
