"Amelia! Get off your lazy bum and come on! They had just posted the announcement."
Oh no. This is not good, if Ember is this excited it could only mean one thing.
A dance
"Oh no, I am not going to this dance. I'm serious Ember, I hate dances and I will not go to this one."
The excited redhead rolls her eyes and grabs my arm. "Come on Amy, it's our final year at Hogwarts. And I heard only fifth years and up are aloud to go. At least come with me to see the announcement?"
She had given me her wide eyes and her lip was slightly puckered. This was how she would always win arguments against her boyfriend, August. And now she was using it on me. Ember was desperate.
"Come on, let's get this over with." She smirks and walks out the door, her curly red hair moving gracefully behind her.
I stand beside her as we make our way to the halls. They were filled with students, but not once were we shoved or pushed.
All of the student parted as we made our way through. No doubt because they didn't want to hear what Ember had to say if they didn't.
With her status as a Pureblood and her fathers high position with the ministry, she always received respect. It didn't hurt that I was apart of one of the oldest Pureblood families there was. As much as I loathed Pureblood's thoughts on others, I did enjoy getting respect from my peers.
When we had gotten to the announcement girls were already squealing about their dresses. Ember was right, it was only for the fifth years and up.
Dresses were required as dress robes were required for the men. I guess I could handle wearing heels for a few hours.
Maybe this would be alright. But then I seen the thing I dreaded, I had to find a date.
"Who do you think your going with?" I shrugged "maybe Percy or Oliver, they won't annoy me like the others." She laughs as the boys around us look appalled.
"You could just go with me Amy" I heard one of the twins say. "Or you could go with the better looking twin" says George.
I shake my head "sorry boys, but I won't be taking a younger class men with me." They give me fake looks of sadness "you hurt me Stryker" Fred says.
I roll my eyes and turn to Ember "I'm guessing your going with August then?"
August, hearing the conversation walks over towards us "yes she is." Ember brightens instantly as she makes her way to him. These two have been together since third year and you can still see the love in their eyes.
"I'm guessing your taking Oliver or Percy then, Amelia?" I nod my head to him. A mischievous grin forms on the redheads face "does that mean your going?"
"Yes that means I'm going" I sigh. She jumps up squealing like the previous girl, making myself and her boyfriend laugh. " but I get to choose my dress!"
*
"Ok no homework for tonight. Think of it as my Christmas present to you." The third years cheer as they make their way to leave.I chuckle at their enthusiasm, if only they knew what was coming for them next year. The class was normal for the most part. We didn't speak of what had happened on the full moon, but things weren't awkward between us.
"I heard about the dance they are having before break." I nod my head and continue to grade my half of the papers. "And will you be attending?" I turn to him and see he is staring at me intently.
"I have to, or else Ember will hex me into oblivion." I chuckle at the thought. His look turns curious "you don't want to go?"
I shake my head "I've never been a fan of them. My mother and I would always have to attend the Malfoy's ball during Christmas. We would always laugh at the Pureblood's bragging about who had more money. My family was and still is very wealthy, but they were very noble and wouldn't like to brag of our fortune."
He nods "Your family seem like very nice people." I sigh "yeah, they were." He gives me a confused look so I continue.
"My father had left before I was born. Apparently he was a big contributor in the wizard wars and he gained some enemies, so he had to leave. I didn't even get his last name.
And my mother was killed a few years after you know who died." A frown formed on his face "I'm sorry."
Isn't everyone? The people who didn't even know her are always 'sorry'. It used to make me so mad when people would say that. They had no right to be. But when he said it, it wasn't out of pity. He genuinely was sorry.
"It's fine, I've had a lot of time to deal with being the last Stryker."
"Then who do you live with, if you don't mind me asking." I wave him off "it's fine, and I used to live with the Malfoy's. But once I turned fifteen I was given the Stryker fortune. Almost as quick as I got it, I had gotten a lawyer and became emancipated. Now, I live in a small condo in California."
"So you are all by yourself?"I nod "Percy and Ember will visit but for the most part, yeah."
There was a moment of silence before I sigh "come on, let's get to a more important matter. Will Remus Lupin ask anyone to dance with him at this ball?"
He chuckles before shaking his head "no I will just make sure the students don't sneak in some fire whisky."
I sigh "damn, you ruined my whole night." He scorns me playfully "language, Miss Stryker." I scoff "it's not like your going to give me detention."
His eyes get an mischievous glint "and what if I do?" I roll my eyes "maybe you could forbid me to go to the dance" I say almost hopefully.
He shakes his head "no, that wouldn't be punishment. Now you have to go to the dance as punishment."
"Damn!"
It's not long before our chuckles echo throughout the classroom.
