Chapter 22

Tyler's POV

I walked back into the house, everyone's eyes on me. I felt empty... there was no purpose for my life anymore. The one thing that was held so dear to me was taken, the reason I was here was gone and there was nothing I could do about it.

"Tyler..." Claire began.

I held my hand up and she went silent. "Do not expect me to say anything. The love of my life was just ripped from my grasp. I told her I would be strong for these people but when I reach my room, I will be weak. I will admit it now to you because I can trust you to leave me alone."

"Did you catch him?" Chase asked just as the group that was chasing down Victor returned.

"No sir," they replied in defeat. "We followed him for a good while but it was like they just vanished. We were not strong enough to keep up with them... our wounds were to much."

I felt my hands clench in anger. My hand shot out and punched the wall, sending a good chunk of it flying. "I swear on my life Victor," I screamed out loudly. "I swear I will get revenge for Lucy! You will pay for the innocent life you have taken from me and these people!"

"What are you talking about Tyler?" Lucy's dad asked just as I finished my declaration. "Where is Lucy?" Seconds later he walked around me and saw Lucy's lifeless body laying on the table. "Not my Lucy!" he cried out just as I did.

"I am sorry," I finally broke down. "I couldn't protect her... I tried so hard." I fell to my knees beside him and let the tears stream down my face. "I failed you Lucy, I failed you!" I gripped my hair tightly between my fingers and let out a wail. This was a nightmare that I couldn't wake up from.

"Get him to his room," Chase commanded softly.

Two sets of hands wrapped around my arms and tugged me into a standing position. "Come on honey," my aunt whispered in my ear. She pulled me towards her and wrapped my body in a hug. "Let it out, I am not going to ask you if you are okay... I am not expecting you to be strong in front of me."

"I couldn't..." I began again, hugging her tightly.

"She didn't expect you to protect her," she cut me off. "You two were together... you had a mutual responsibility to protect each other. That is what love is about, I know it hurts but could you imagine what it would have been like for her if you would have given your life for her?"

I thought about it and I knew that Lucy would have a rough time handling it herself. She has always thought of herself as weak and that someone always had to protect her. She looked so peaceful, she was able to do something that made her realize that she was more than just a girl in the way. I knew that if it was the other way around she would have thought differently... I just wish that she didn't have to die to find that peace.

"Why did she have to leave me," I cried out. "Why did it have to end this way?"

There was another cry now and I knew that her mother was now in the room. Lucy's father pulled her into a hug and muffled her crying. They were in as much pain as I was, the only difference was that she was meant to be my partner.

I pulled away and walked up to my room, closing the door behind me. I let my body slide down against the door and placed my hand over my heart. The feeling was horrible; it was like my heart was being ripped out of my chest. "I swear I will get revenge, just as you are going to come after me."

I sat like that for the rest of the night. Darkness began to take over and I took this as my time to leave. I grabbed my bag and shoved all my belongings in it before walking over to the window. I took one last look at the room and pulled the window open, sliding out of it with easy. I jumped down to the ground and was about to run when a figure popped up in front of me.

"Where are you going?" Claire asked.

"I am going to get my revenge," I stated and started to walk around her. "Don't try and stop me."

"I'm not," she replied. "I am coming with you. There is no way that he is going to get away with stealing my best friend from me. He will pay for the day that he ever declared war against Lucy."

I looked back at her and noticed she had a backpack and a duffle bag in her hand. There was a look of determination on her face and I knew that there was no telling her no now. "We are heading to the town of Luke Lake, just outside of this area... Victor ran in that direction. No doubt he has a safe house somewhere close by, we will start there."

With that we left behind everything, those we cared about and the place that held such painful memories. There was going to be pain and I knew one thing, it wasn't going to go away anytime soon.
