Before Winter Comes

Counting the days until summer is over

The leaves overstretch in the ray of light

Until winter comes

Then it will shrivel up and fall

Little girl playing double-dutch in the streets

Never looking over her shoulders

Distracted by the flowers in her hair

Unaware of possible bees swarming

The fear is not from the pain of the sting

But when it's going to happen,

The anticipation,

The element of surprise will uncover a greater pain.

Little girl dreamed of an elephant

Strong, wise creature

It plays around in mud

Covering itself from head to tail

As much as there is mud on the elephant

It will harden

And it's true scent shall be revealed

Summer was safe

With flower heads rising above the ground

Always looking up towards the sky

But never beneath

Never know when the rug gets pulled out from under

And when it does

It will be the last fight until winter comes
