-Three Days Before-
The Dining Hall was spectacularly decorated for my seventeenth birthday. I stood in the doorway open-mouthed as I took in the scene. Crystal orbs hung in enormous bunches from the ceiling. Colorful balls of light were suspended in the center of each one. These same spheres floated around the room, their numbers higher than I could possibly count.
"There are exactly four hundred and fifty of them." Father stated. I stared at him with wide eyes. Tristan, my twin brother, laughed. I turned to glare at him. His childish grin only infuriated me more. I opened my mouth to speak, but my frustration wouldn't allow me to find the words.
"What's the matter sis?" he giggled. His facial features transformed to that of a feline. "Cat got your tongue?" I wordlessly took my seat across from him and turned to my father. He sat innocently watching me as he took a mouthful of scrambled eggs and chewed loudly. How dare my father read my mind without my permission?!
"Sindri, I don't need your permission to exercise my power." he stated. There he goes again! Does he just think that because he king he can do that?!
"No, I do it simply because I can." His deep blue eyes dug into mine. I could feel him prodding my mind.
"Mother! Father is reading me without cause!" I cried. His eyes widened as Catriana placed a hand on his arm. His head snapped around to meet her gaze. I grinned knowing I had won this battle. My mother's power is extraordinary. She has the ability to control a person's thoughts and actions. She was both loved and feared by the kingdom.
Father's face relaxed then brightened into a smile. He turned to me. "My daughter, I sincerely apologize for my unfair display of power over you." My mother removed her hand, yet he continued. "In hopes that all is forgiven, I offer you this." He scooped up a portion of his egg in a spoon. Seconds later, egg was sliding down my face. Tristan burst into hysterical laughter.
I smiled sweetly at my father. "All is forgiven." I filled my spoon with syrup and flung it at the King. It met its mark with a satisfying smack. The gooey substance dripped down his face. My mother sat sipping her water as if none of this had ever happened. Father glared at me. If looks could kill, I'd be long dead.
I reloaded my weapon. "Tristan!" I sang. Before he could make a move, syrup went flying toward his face. He attempted to duck, but the slime landed on top of his head. I laughed for the first time in weeks.
"My hair!" he shrieked. "Oh, its on." In mere seconds, all but Mother were covered in a wide range of breakfast foods. We were shouting and laughing and having the grandest time, that is until he showed up. The giant wooden doors swung open revealing none other than my uncle, High Lord Gallahein.
