Chapter One

*Laurence*

"Laurence, Kyler! Come inside please!" Mother yelled from the house.

I picked up my baby sister, Kyler, and ran up the hill. I walked up to the front door just as the sun was setting.

I turned around and let Kyler see. Her big eyes glistening. I smiled before I turned around and walked inside.

"Thank you Laurence. Now go wash up before dinner," My mother smiled
"Yes mommy," I said before I ran off.

I sat down at the table next to Kyler's high chair. She was drooling and giggling.

I smiled at her and held out my finger. She grabbed it with her small hand and stuck it in her mouth.

"Laurence, get your finger out of your sisters mouth," my mother laughed
"She likes it," I smiled
"You were playing outside, who knows where your finger has been," she laughed
"Fine, but now she has nothing to chew on," I said crossing my arms
"What about food?" Mother asked as she put cut up bread on Kyler's high chair table.

She set a plate in front of me and one on the opposite side of the table. I looked at the difference of food on our plates.

"Mommy, why don't we eat the same things?" I asked her
"One, your a young boy, you need to grow big and strong. Second, you and your sister need more food than me, you both are very young and you both have a long lives ahead of you." She smiled
"But why don't you eat more? Don't you need to grow strong?" I asked and she tensed up
"Laurence, mommy's only worried about you and Kyler. I will be okay if I eat less. Until daddy comes home this is how we will have to live." She said reaching for my hand across the table
"But when is daddy coming home?" I asked her and a tear slipped out of her eye
"Do you remember when I taught you about being a strong solider and fighting for what you believe in?" She asked me and I nodded
"Well, that's what daddy is doing right now. He is fighting for our land." She said
"So he's a hero?" I asked
"Yes, daddy is a hero." She smiled
"Then I wanna be just like daddy when I grow up." I smiled before I ate some food.

"Laurence wake up!" A whisper shout from my mother
"Why? It's dark outside," I said sleepily
"Remember how you said you wanted to be a hero?" She asked me
"Yes, like father," I nodded
"Then take your sister and run. Evil people are going to be here soon, they want your sister, and they will kill us all if you don't leave. Take this backpack. It has a compass, a very special necklace, food, and water. Now go," she said putting the backpack on my back and placing Kyler in my arms
"What about you?" I asked as tears filled my eyes
"Laurence don't cry please, be strong, not just for you but for Kyler, me and your father, be strong. I must stay here. Now go." She said before she hugged me and Kyler tight and kissed us both.
"Mommy I'm scared," I whispered as a bomb exploded near our house
"It's okay to be scared, just be brave. I love you." She cried as she opened the back door and I ran.

I looked down at Kyler as I ran. Her big eyes full of confusion and terror. The black sky reflected from them.

"Hey, shhhh," I whispered as I rocked Kyler asleep.

I sat under a big tree. The sun wouldn't rise for another three hours. I leaned my head against the hard wood.

I looked back down at the small child in my arms. So small, so precious. I opened the backpack and grabbed the necklace my mother spoke about.

I examined the beautiful crystal. It was dark red and shaped like a moon and star. I lifted it up to Kyler's head and before I set it around her neck the star fell off.

I picked it up. It was attached to another set of string. A smaller set. Maybe a bracelet. I slid the star on my wrist. Perfect.

Then I gently set the moon around her neck. She was now sleeping calmly.

My eyes got heavy. I slowly shut them as I griped Kyler. The blanket around her wasn't very warm.

I held her close to my chest to keep her warm. She snored quietly. I smiled at her.

"I love you," I whispered before I fell asleep.
