As I sat on the train, gazing out the window, I thought of what I would do when I got back home. It was a cold January day and in the late evening I had to catch the train. It's a long overnight journey back, but I didn't mind, I had my phone, iPod, books and some paper to draw on. I still have no idea why I had to go all the way up to Scotland to visit some stupid church when we couldn't just study about it.
The clock on the train started o flash as it passed onto 9pm. A screech of metal signified the train stopping. There was suddenly a lot more people on the train and I started to get a little claustrophobic, this wasn't going to be a fun journey.
It seemed like hours had passed until the train came to another stop, even though it was only thirteen minutes. Many of the people who had just got on got off again, and every seat was still full even after they had left. There was only one seat spare and it was next to me- beside the window as I wanted to stay by myself. Continuing to look out the window, I put my ear phones back in an listened to the sounds of Area 11 play. For a not so popular band, they were a hit in the second year uni students.
I began to slowly drift off until someone tapped my shoulder lightly. I pulled out one earphone as Versus continued I play in the other.
Infront of me stood a small black haired girl with a small dress on. She couldn't have been more than twenty, but she was still very small, only about 5ft.
"Excuse me sir," she spoke softly, "can I please sit with you? There are no other seats on the train and I'm going I Bristol."
"Oh uh," I stuttered, she was very cute and I was also heading to Bristol, perhaps I could make a new friend. "Of course."
I then moved my bag into the overhead compartment and moved towards the window. She sat down beside me cautiously.
"Thank you, I'm Kim." Kim said, holding out her hand in the small amount of space we had.
"It's alright, I'm Ross," I replied, trying to seem as kind as possible without overdoing it.
"Where are you headed?" Kim asked after a few minutes of silence.
"Oh, I'm heading back to Bristol, the Uni made me go on this stupid trip."
"Same! Well not the whole trip thing, I was just visiting my friend Nilesy with my other friend Hannah, but she's staying with him for a few days." Kim replied enthusiastically.
I turned back to the window as she began to get a book out from her bag. Deciding to shut everyone else out, I put in the other earphone and listened to Heaven Piercing Giga Drill. It was a while until the next stop as there were no towns or villages for another thirty minutes. I began to drift off once more, however I was rudely interrupted by someone tapping my shoulder.
I sighed and turned back to Kim whilst puling out my right earphone.
"Yes Kim?"
"Sorry to disturb you but is it okay if I lean against you, I really want to get some sleep but these chairs aren't exactly comfortable. It's okay if you say no!" Kim whispered cautiously, as if I would hurt her since she woke me up.
"No it's fine I guess, I also wanted to get some sleep. Good night I guess." I mumbled tiredly.
"Good night Ross." She hummed.
Hours later I awoke to the sudden jolt of a train stopping. My eyes snapped open an I looked around. Kim was also suddenly awake.
"What was that?" She almost cried.
"I have no idea Kim." I replied shakily.
The train was deserted apart from Kim and I, which Would make sense as it was two in the morning. Everything was pitch black apart from the slight light of Kim's phone. She moved into the space by the doors and looked outside, I followed shortly after and stood behind her. Everything was dark and it seemed as though we were still on the tracks.
Suddenly, the train started again and Kim tumbled backwards into me and we both ended up on the floor. Quickly clambering upwards, Kim struggled to stand. I just laughed and pulled her back down. My bag had fallen during the stop so it was within arms reach.
Still holding Kim down, I reached an pulled a blanket and pillow from my bag. I placed the pillow under my head and the blanket over us. Once she realised what I was doing, she stopped struggling and lay her head on my shoulder.
"This is actually quite comfortable, you make a good bed." She admitted bride yawning.
I simply laughed and began to fall asleep. I heard a soft hum of content as Kim began to drift off to sleep.
Maybe this journey wont be as bad as I thought it would...
