We run back up to our room, still soaking wet from the pool. We all take turns in the shower so we won't have to walk all the way back to the hospital with chlorine smell in our hair. I hop in the shower first, letting the warm water fall against my skin. I run my fingers through my newly red hair. Maybe the perm was a bad idea. I think I'll change it back to normal when we leave here. Here. I can't believe I'm here. I guess it's just now hitting me but...wow. We really did escape.
After we gather our stuff and put a few of the complementary soap and deoderant bars in our backpacks (Fel's idea), we walk downstairs to give the lady back the room key but when I hear someone around the corner, I stop in my tracks. "Have you seen these people?" One of the guards ask the woman, holding a sign with our pictures on it in the woman's face.
"I don't think so," the woman says, "I certaintly would have recognized a handsome man like that," the woman chuckles, pointing to Dylan. I roll my eyes but listen closely. "If you see them then please notify the police immediately." the guard informs the woman. "Certainly," the woman replies. When the guard leaves, I have a debate with myself in my head. Maybe she won't recognize us with our new hair styles, part of me says. But the picture was in black and white, the other half says.
I sigh deeply and run my fingers through my wet hair, trying to figure out what to do. I give in and walk up to the woman, throwing the key across the desk. "Checking out," I say, trying to keep my head down. I can see her take the key and I hear her typing furiously on the computer. "Did you enjoy your stay?" She asks, not really paying attention. "Sure." I say. When I turn around to go, I know she's caught sight of my face because she widens her eyes in surprise. I act like I don't notice but when Fel peeks her head out from around the corner I mouth the word run.

I can hear the leaves crunching underneath my feet. We were more than halfway to the hospital when I knew that the woman must have called the police because we had to dart into the woods to avoid getting seen by an oncoming police car. When the coast was clear, we decided to stay in the woods so we wouldn't have to risk getting seen by another one. I knew Thelma was here today because I memorized her schedule. Ali was nice and all but she couldn't listen to me like Thelma could. She was like the mother I never had.
When we stepped onto the property, I made sure to be careful. I ran over to Thelma's car and realized that maybe I should ask for the keys before breaking the window and hotwiring the car. But when I tried the door, it wasnt't locked and the keys were in the car. She must've known that I'd come back one day. That was Thelma. She knew what I was thinking, before I even thought it. Robbie's the oldest one and the only one out of us with a license so we decided that he should drive. He turned on the car and we were off.
