"Right we're gonna go over that section one more time before you perform it in the audition room." Yelled the shrill voice of the admin girl, attempting to be heard among hundreds.
The entire room was crowded, full of young, energetic dancers, all with their eye on the same prize - a coveted place on the prestigious "Burn The Floor" show. The atmosphere was electric, all the dancers were being fairly amicable with each other, but deep down, the tensions between them were rising. In the corner, Aljaž stood marking the routine whilst muttering the steps quietly. Everyone seemed to know someone else in the room, seemed to feel as though they belonged. He, however, felt alone.
"Right, auditionees number 21, 46, 87 and 93 make your way into the main studio please." The stuck-up admin girl called out. A mass turning of heads occured - all the dancers trying to spot the four that had just been summoned. There were a few shuffles of feet before three dancers began to weave through the rabble. Aljaž was one of them.
Ensuring his number - 21 - was stuck the right way up, he made his way towards the main studio.
A thousand thoughts were racing through his head - Why did he even bother auditioning? Everyone else was better than him, what was he thinking? Was it too late to walk out now? He walked with his eyes firmly fixated on the floor, only to realise that there was one auditionee missing. Number 87 was nowhere to be seen.
The snooty admin girl was ruffling papers on her clipboard, trying to identify who number 87 was. "Number 87? Janette... Manrara?" She yelled, impatience in her voice clearly evident.
Rolling her eyes and groaning about how undedicated number 87 obviously was, she prepared to call out another number, when the door of the studio suddenly burst open.
"Sorry! Sorry I'm late!" Shouted a breathless voice. Aljaž snapped his head up to try and look at who it was, only to spot the most gorgeous woman he had ever seen. Dazed for a moment, he allowed a weak smile to crawl across his face. This Janette girl dropped her bags and jumped over, taking her place beside him and whispering "Hi, I'm not too late am I?"
Shocked at how this beautiful human could be talking to him, Aljaž stumbled over his words, managing to utter "No, don't worry." Janette could clearly see that he was lying - she herself knew that she was very late indeed.
She giggled a little and
Aljaž joined in nervously, bdfore being glared at and shushed by the admin girl.Escorting them into the main studio, Aljaž felt his nerves multiply. This. Was. It.
Upon entering the main studio, Aljaž, along with the other three auditionees eyed each member of the judging panel. Three figures sat brooding, prepared to see the same routines performed over and over again.
After an initial look, Aljaž recognised one man immediately as the head director of the show was scribbling something frantically on a sheet of paper. The man next to him, a younger, quirkily dressed 35 year old, started. "Hi guys, thanks for coming to audition. As you know, we need 4 new lead dancers and 3 support dancers. So show us what you can do. Good Luck." He seemed so relaxed, which made Aljaž seen uneasy. Before he could talk himself out of the audition, the last judge, a lady named Katie, piped up. "The first dance you will do is a partnered cha cha. 46, you are to dance with 93. 21, you are with 87."
Aljaž gasped under his breath. He slowly turned his head to look at number 87, Janette, and suddenly felt himself go bright red. The pressure of auditioning itself was tough enough, but the added pressure of impressing this woman he had developed a crush on was too much to handle.
Janette looked back at him, making eye contact and smiling. She walked over and clasped his hand firmly, then prepared to get into hold.
The music sprung to life and she gazed into his eyes for a split second before the pair of them burst into an energetic routine.
The dance lasted for 90 seconds, but for Aljaž, it felt like a lifetime. The usually quick footwork seemed to slow down and time seemed to come to a standstill. The music was cut off, but they stayed in hold for an extra few seconds, Janette's nose touching his, and his eyes fixated on hers. She gave a breathless giggle, tapped him on the nose and pulled out of hold. She resumed her place next to him, fidgeting anxiously awaiting feedback.
The judges began, pointing out all the elements of the routines they liked. All the while, Aljaž simply stood allowing the the speech to become background noise in shock at what had just happened, and at that moment, he knew he was in love.
