7. My Dad Is My Uncle
"How are you?" His voice sounds so frail.
"Dad, I-I've missed you so much," I say as I sit on a bench wiping away the tears that don't seem to stop.
"Stop crying, Madison," He says and I smile. "I'm coming to pick you and Jason right now. Wait for me at the front gates."
"W-What? You're coming here? Dad, if mom finds out..."
"She won't find out, God Damn it!" He yells.
He takes a deep breath and continues, "I'm sorry, Madison. Don't worry about her. She can't keep you away from me. I'm your father."
"O-Okay, Dad." I say, getting up from the bench. "I'll tell Jason. W-We'll meet you in some time, Dad. Bye."
"Bye, Maddie. I love you."
"I love you too, Dad," I reply and I can almost feel Dad smiling, through the phone.
I cut the call and quickly dial Jason's number.
"Mmmmmm." He says into the mouthpiece and the first picture that comes to my mind, is of him in his bed - not quite alone.
GOSH EW NO!!
Fortunately, Jason recovers quite quickly.
"What do you want? We aren't going anywhere, Mads. We're orphans, remember?" His voice sounds sleepy.
"Dad's coming to pick us up. He told me to tell you that we need to meet him at the front gates in some time. And no, I've not lost it. Get ready fast," I say, and cut the call.
I walk to the front gates and wait at the side of the road. A lot of cars have been parked and everywhere, students are greeting their parents and enjoying themselves.
After about five minutes, Jason comes running towards me, his eyes searching for someone, his hair totally messed up.
Yet, the girls around chatter excitedly as they walk past him, and he smirks at them.
Why do I have to witness all of this, God?
As he approaches me, he looks suspiciously at me and questions,"Not a joke, right?"
"No way, son," a voice says.
I whirl around and see Dad standing a few feet away.
The two years haven't changed him at all. He looks just the same with his brown hair and piercing blue eyes in which I find solace.
Jason looks at him, shocked. I run and hug Dad tight and before I know it, I'm sobbing. He pulls away and wipes the tears off, just like old times.
I turn to look at Jason and I can see how hard he is trying to not cry. He hugs Dad tight and Dad holds him by the shoulders, looking at him proudly.
"I can't believe it. How much you both have grown," He says, ruffling my hair.
"I reach your shoulders now," I say, proud of the fact that I'm 5'9 and he smiles down at me.
"Huh, I'm taller than you and him," Jason scoffs.
"Just a little taller than him," I fake a smile at him. "Atleast I'm smarter than you!" I stick my tongue out at him and he tries to grab at me but I hide behind Dad who simply laughs.
"Kids! Stop fighting and get into the car," He orders us.
Jason takes the front seat and sneers as he does so, while I sulk and get into the back seat.
