"Is that Avery guy Mer's boyfriend?" Mark asked Derek while they were looking for the resident in their service.

"I don't know, but all I know is that he's head of plastics"

"It's just like the old days right?"

"Yeah, except Meredith has a boyfriend and mean friends"

"Exactly, the Meredith we knew would never been caught dead with a guy, and was the nicest person I knew" Mark added.

Two guys headed up to them.

"Hi I'm Dr. DeLuca, the resident on your service Dr. Sloan"

Mark nodded grabbing some charts and headed off with the resident.

"Hi Dr. Shepherd, I'm Dr. Mitchell, I'm on you service this week" the other resident stated.

"Hi, We have a craniotomy scheduled this afternoon, do everything correctly and you might scrub in" Derek addressed his subordinate.

Mitchell nodded and walked clutching the charts.

Derek headed towards the attending's lounge. In Mt. Sinai (his previous workplace) he had been the head of nureo. But his chief didn't seem like retiring any moment, so Derek jumped at the idea of becoming chief at SGH. Even if he didn't become chief, and Meredith did, he could still become the head of neuro. Deep down, everyone know the real competition was between Meredith and Derek, even Mark knew. So Stevens and everyone else trying to become chief couldn't make it. Although he had to admit, seeing his grade school friends opened up some wounded memories. As much as Derek wouldn't want to acknowledge it, young Meredith, from all those years ago, stole his heart. And she still has it. Even if she doesn't know it. And the mere thought of knowing her boyfriend Jackson, touched her, in places he yearned for, hurt.

When he opened the door of the attending's lounge, he was welcomed with Dr. Karev making out with a girl, and a few other doctors mingling. But what caught his attention was Meredith talking to a fellow attending. The attending's name, he couldn't recall. Dr. Osborne or something.
They were laughing and giggling together.

God, Meredith how many people do you flirt with?

He thought to himself. He made some coffee for himself and started going through some medical journal, when Meredith came up to him.

"Hey Derek"

"Oh, hey"

"I have this case, the patient's sister wanted a second opinion, so I told her that she was lucky cause the second best nureo surgeon was here, and he's look over it." She smiled.

"Second best?"

"Ofcourse. I'm the first best, and I'm unbeatable."

Derek just nodded, "who was that attending you were talking to?"

"Oh he was my sister's boyfriend, he was just asking what she would like for her birthday"

"Sister as in Lexie?"

"Oh no, my other half sister, Maggie, she is an architect"

"Oh..."

"But Lexie, she fine. So is Molly. I keep in touch with them. Lexie is a journalist and she decided to take trip to Florida for an article"

"Oh that's good, and I'd be happy to help you with you nureo case"

"Thanks, and maybe we can get coffee some time, catch up, you know?"

"Uh, sure" Derek smiled.
