"I killed us all."
It took everything in me to spit those words out. I thought maybe, just maybe, I could've pretended nothing happened. Like everything was still the same. I was still in that crappy old town in Arizona. The town that couldn't quite get any bigger, and where the sun couldn't ever reach Moon Lake. The world would still be tilting ever so slightly on its axis.
But I wasn't, and it wasn't. At least not in my world. I was completely drowned in guilt and shame. And as for my world? Well it had completely flown off its axis and hit me in the face. Literally. My world being Sapphire. I guess I deserved it, even when she said don't believe a word she said, and to tell Lucas she was sorry. I didn't know what to believe, but I guess that was my punishment.
"Krylan," my brother croaked, "Please tell me what you did."
I whimpered and dropped my head back onto the wall. Tears spiraled down my cheeks and dropped onto my shirt, soaking it. My face turned away from him, ashamed, like he could actually see me through the cell wall. His words make a tidal wave of a whole new guilt crash over me.
Images swirled around my head and tears blurred my vision. Everything around me tilted, and just like that, I was sucked back into the night of my mistake.
Quietly, I shut the door behind me. Not wanting to wake my brother up. There was no way in hell he would be okay with what I'm about to do. Heck, I wasn't even sure if I was okay with what I was about to do. But it was for her. And I'd do whatever it took. Just as long as she could live.
Finally, I found the latch to our cellar and I tugged on it. It made a slight creak but the sound of thunder drowned it out. The door swung on it hinges and allowed me access. With one look behind my back I walked into the room. The Lightning lit up my face from the small window in the room. And just as I hoped, the full moon was shining directly in it.
I grabbed some ingredients and The Book of Lost Souls and threw them on the old wooden table, stained with various other potions and poisons. I grabbed the marble bowl and quickly started mashing the ingredients together, following the instruction carefully. You were never supposed to use this book, it was laced with black magic. It was a cursed object, one I found in the ruins of some tombs in Paris.
It had to work. This had to work.
When I was done mixing, I grabbed the golden knife off the shelf. The knife burned when it made contact with my skin but I quickly sliced it across my palm. I bared my teeth at the slice but let it pour into the bowl. Then I walked up to the window and stuck my finger into the purplish blood welling up in my palm. Before my mind could even catch up my finger started to draw the symbol in the book onto the window. Right on top of the moon.
My body burned with this unknown power. It was dark, I could feel it. But I couldn't help but smile at the familiarness of it. Once I was done I stuck the cut hand into the greenish mix I made. The other hand grabbed The Book of Lost Souls, and I started the verse in Latin.
"Spiritus invoco a mortuis
sumere , pro alterius vita
ut non possit renasci denuo post haec
sed uigent , vel descendunt in dolore
animam meam pro sua
me cum fratre et
et labantes
numquam surgere!"
(In English next ¥)
"Spirits, i call upon you from the dead
take my offering, for the life of another
may she not be reborn again after this
but flourish, or go down in pain
take my soul in exchange for hers
take my brother and me down with her
and when we fall
we will never again rise!"
