🌹Cascade's pov🌹
~seven years later~
It was our birthday. Our fourteenth birthday. Today was the day that we were allowed to go to the beach by ourselves without the most dreaded Sabrina. I slipped into a sleeveless light blue bikini and grabbed a surf board that used to belong to my dad before he passed away. I knocked on Callie's door which was across the hallway from mine. "Hey Cal I'm going to the beach, do you want to come with?" I called Callie Cal sometimes. I was easier.
"Is Bre coming?" Just like Callie had a nick name so did Aubrey, and it was Bre. I had a nick name as well, it was Cas.
"I don't know, I haven't asked yet."
"Okay let me put on my swim suit."
"Okay I have a birthday present for you." I leaned the surf board on the door and walked a door down to Aubrey's room. I was about to knock on her door but I swung open. I would've fell on my face but she caught me.
"Hey Cal going to the beach?"
"You guessed it." We walked down the hallway our footsteps in perfect unison. We stopped at my room so I could grab something I got for Bre. It was a Navy blue flower crown that was handcrafted in Hawaii. I set it in her hands and her face lit up with joy.
"Thank you, how did you get it?"
"Unlike you I actually save money."
"Shut up."
Callie's door opened and we turned around to see her greeted with a wooden surf board with a Navy blue outline and a Navy blue circle and a wooden heart in the middle. Her eyes were tearing up and I could tel she was speechless. She leaned the surfboard against the wall and tackled me in a hug.
"Is this one that dad made?"
I nodded my head. "He showed me it two days before he passed. He said he was going to give it to you today, but he's not here, so I did it for him. Do you like it?"
"No, I love it." I smiled as we ran down the stairs starting out our first day of beach freedom dangerously. I slid across the hard wood floor and stopped in front of the row of flip flops all lined up against the wall. I grabbed the smallest pair with happens to be silver and slipped them on my feet while using Aubrey as balance. I might have been smart but I was also clumsy. Very clumsy.
Sabrina came into the hallway where us three stood ready to leave. "Are you guys going to the beach?" We nodded our heads and Sabrina continued. "Really? Don't you have to be fourteen to go to the beach alone?" She acted like she didn't know that we were already fourteen but we knew that she was actually counting down the day until she didn't have to look after us anymore.
"Um Sabrina," Callie said as politely as she could "we are fourteen. Today's our birthday." Sabrina turned and scoffed. When she began to walk away I could hear her mumble 'brat, brains, and bonehead' under her breath.
We walked out of the dreadful house and eventually ended up in wet sand, our toes sinking in like it was quicksand. I took a deep breath of the salty air and felt at home. Mom and dad used to take us to the beach and try to teach us how the surf. Calliewas the only one who actually understood. Aubrey was too busy weaving flowers into a crown to pay attention and I couldn't keep my nose out of a book for more than two seconds to even know I was at the beach. But I liked it that way. There were no worries, no Sabrina, and no counting down days until you could leave a smelly vodka filled house. The only one thing better about living with Sabrina is having my own room, but I do have to admit, I feel lonely a lot more often with my sisters not by my side. Often times I find myself lost in thought and have a hard time snapping back into reality.
Callie set her surfboard down and grabbed my hand. I then grabbed Aubrey's hand and we ran into the endless ocean leaving only our footsteps behind us.
