I went to the cafeteria for lunch on monday when I heard footsteps behind me and felt a tap on my shoulder.
'Hey how are you?' She asked and I suddenly froze, remembering what Louie told me the other day.
'Oh Im fine now Juliana. Dont worry.' I smiled eagerly and she walked beside me with worried eyes.
'Are you sure?' She asked as we occupied the empty lunch table.
I nodded.
'Can I see your wounds? Are they okay now? Dont you ever do that again. God!' Her eyes were getting bigger with every question.
'Chill, Juls. Theyre fine and all dried up.' I grinned as I pulled my sleeves up to let her see my scars. She nodded.
'Juls, I like the sound of that.' She couldnt help but smile.
'Yeah, I'll call you that from now on then.' We both agreed.
'Ok great. Are you going to debate later?' She said as she took a bite of her sandwich.
'Yeah.' I said, my mouth full of pizza and I almost choked as I talked and she laughed.
'Ohmygod! She laughed again. 'Dont talk when your mouth is full.'
'Im sorry!' I laughed too, trying to chew my food.
I couldnt help but stare at her. Her face full of innocence. I couldnt imagine myself ever being tired of looking at her.
'What?' She might have noticed I was staring.
'What what?' I asked, trying to fix my eyes on the busy crowd buying their own lunches.
'Youre staring.' She said and the air suddenly got hot and sticky.
Awkward.
'Im not. Why would I?' I laughed awkwardly. Damn.
'You were.' She laughed, covering her face.
'I wasnt. But if I did, what's wrong with it? We were talking of course I would look at you.' I said.
'It wasnt "looking", it was staring. Whatever.' She playfully stuck her tongue out.
'Anyways, hows your boyfriend?' I teased. Her eyes got so big and she almost spit out her sandwich.
'Boyfriend??' She drank a lot of water and I watched her as I laughed.
Not that Im a saddist, I just find her reaction funny. And I didnt wonder we she reacted the way she did.
'I dont have a boyfriend anymore.' She gaped.
Anymore. Anymore. Anymore. It echoed in my head. Why did it hurt?
'Ohh, so you had one?' I asked with a straight face but I tried to sound cheerful and enthusiastic about it.
'Yeah.' She nodded.
'What happened?' I asked.
'Oh, you know, when it doesnt work out anymore and you find yourself inlove with another person. It feels so wrong staying with the someone you dont love anymore. Thats over a year now anyway.'
I remembered Allen.
I stayed with him because I promised again and again that I wouldnt leave him. I stayed because he was the only constant thing in my life. He was there, he was my base. Sometimes I would be confused about how I feel. I wasnt really sure of everything until maybe atleast now. It's all a different story now.
