tainted emotions

anika sat onto the cold, hard tiled floor down the hall from her classroom. tears escaped the underlid of her brown eyes and make their way to the corners of her lips and the down her chin, seeping into the fabric of her abstract art shirt. sadly, she wasn't crying happy tears but tears filled with frustration, anger and sadness. school had just started and she was already ready to escape, run home and drown herself in creative writing and art.

the three girls that always teased her, were extra harsh today. no matter how many times she stood up for herself, or ignored them, their words still managed to climb through her ear, into her brain, sabotaging her current happy, positive thoughts with slight truth. anika knew her glasses were large and made her face look abnormal, she knew her clothes weren't the best considering her parents barely having money even if they work decent jobs, she knew she was different than most girls, she'd rather read and write than shop and gossip. in a way she didn't care what anyone thought, but she also wondered if what those girls said were true.

was she bad looking? did she actually look trashy?

her mind instantly thought of angus and his sweet notes. she quickly shuffled through her things and found the handful of folded notes stuffed into her sacred journal. and she began to read them all, word by word, piece by piece, meaning by meaning. in the heat of the moment she pulled out her blue ink pen and turned to a blank page in her book.

"angus, thank you. thank you so much for all the notes filled with sweet compliments and reminders, they are a constant reminder that not all people in this tragedic world are as cruel. maybe one day most people will be like you, nice and kind. to be truthfully, you are my only true friend. can i refer to us as friends? i feel like we're friends. your notes always make me feel better when i'm feeling sad or lonely. wow, now i sound mushy. i hope your day isn't as crummy as mine.
love, anika"

she folded the note and placed a big heart on the front, she felt weird considering angus usually wrote the letters, but she didn't know what else to do, she needed some type of comfort, and angus was her comfort.

it was interesting how angus always happened to find anika in the hall. he furrowed his eyebrows when he saw her, angus noticed how hard she was scribbled into her journal, the sad look on her face made him want to run up to her and squeeze her so tightly that she turned blue, red or even purple and maybe even give her a few gentle kisses against her cheek.

but instead he quietly approached her and sat beside her, "what's wrong?" he mumbled, trying to carefully look over at her journal without her noticing, but she immediately closed it. "i wrote you something." a folded note laid onto his leg. he opened it and began to read it, which was also weird because it broke their routine slightly. when angus was done reading the note he folded it back up and slowly placed it into his front pocket to keep it safe.

"what happened in class? were those girls mean to you again?" she just nodded, honestly she didn't want to go in much detail with him right now, maybe she'd tell him later. angus took a big step and grasped her hand that awkwardly dangled off her knee, "this is weird, you've never written me a note before, it's exciting yet sad due to the reasoning."

"angus?"

"yes?"

"do you think i'm tr-trashy?" angus frowned, how could she ask such a degrading question, why would someone try and dull a bright star by saying such untrue things, "of course not. please don't believe what those girls tell you, they are just jealous because you are willing to be different and they are threatening by it due to the good attention you receive."

anika didn't say much more, she felt like taking a stroll around town with angus after school. which she suggested, of course he agreed.
