"Have you ever been out of the city Susan?" I was fixing Calem and I a tasty breakfast of some backed beans and ham from a can when out popped the question. "Not really. Why?" I replied. Maybe this kid had something useful to tell me.
"Well," he started, "My mum, dad and I were going to leave for that highway, um, I think it's that way." He took his gaze off me and pointed west, only a couple of streets up from where his house was.
He continued. "Anyway, we were going to leave as soon as mum and dad had enough supplies but then the monsters came and well, you know....."
"Why did you guys want to leave?" I asked as I finished my breakfast. I had a feeling this was about to get interesting.
"I heard mum and dad talking," he said as he to finished his breakfast, "And they said there was some kind of cabin near the highway and that other people might be there."
This was great news. For a while, back when I'd first checked out the city, I thought I was the only one left and that there was no one left to help me.
When I saw Calem jump out that window I think it ignited a tiny flame of hope in my heart and that was why I'd saved him because right now, in his tiny, fragile face, there was a glimpse of hope and I knew right then that our only chance to survive was to leave the city.
This place was really dangerous because of it being so crowded before the plague, so I decide leaving was worth a shot.
"OK." I said, thinking things through, "We should leave and find this place but we're going to need more things to hold our supplies and you'll need some more clothes. Any ideas?"
"I have an idea," Calem replied, "But I don't think your going to like it." "Hit me." I said, a little nervous about what was coming next. "I have some clothes at my house but that's only if you think we should do it."
The kid was right. I didn't like the idea but it was the best chance we had and the house is near the highway so if we need a quick getaway there should be a car nearby.
"It's a pretty good plan but we'll need a car as well as another bag or two to hold stuff in." I said as I grabbed my bag and filled it with essentials. "Easy," Calem replied, "There are some bags at the house too and we can use the car that my mum and dad found. It has the keys inside and the petrol tank is full."
"OK, so here's the plan. Get to your house, grab what we need then get in the car and go. Sound good?" I asked. I really thought this plan could work.
"Sounds good." He said.
