Living Amongst The Dead

Chapter 18

I couldn't believe he'd stated how he felt for me so confidently.

I'd known Ben for only a couple of days and yet, I felt something for him that I'd never felt for anyone before. He was kind to Calem and I and he seemed very upfront about keeping the ones he loved safe.

"So." I asked him with a smirk on my face. "Does this mean your my boyfriend?" He let out a chuckle before replying coolly. "Definitely, if you like me back. Do you?"

I kissed him on the cheek before replying. "Does that answer you question?" He smiled and we headed out of the bathroom.

Calem was sitting on the floor, chewing his nails while watching the door anxiously. He turned his head when we entered the room and asked the question that I'm sure was on all of our minds. "So what do we do now?"

I could see a tinge of worry in his eyes so I replied calmly. "I think we need to start looking for some supplies." I asked Ben where we were headed next and he told us about a shop not that far from here that had things like food and camping supplies. Apparently it was only across from where we were currently.

Ben and the others must have been to this place hundreds of times so it was good that he knew where to go. It was better than going in blinded.

I walked over to the window beside the door and peaked through the shades. There were no threats outside the cabin except for a few zombies here and there which we would easily be able to get past.

I told Ben and Calem that we should get going after I looked at my watch which read 11:55. We still had plenty of time to get what we needed and meet back with the others.

We snuck out of the cabin, careful not to make any noise and went towards where Ben had said the shop was. Before we knew it, we were standing right in front of the place, the painted sign worn and cracked so it made it impossible to make out what it said.

Ben hopped through the smashed glass doors, careful not to cut himself to see if there was anything waiting for us inside. There were only two zombies which he quickly took care of, then he motioned for us to enter.

We all agreed to be as quick as possible and in a flash we had everything we needed. My watch read 12:21 so we still had plenty of time until we had to go back and meet the others. Calem, Ben and I all sat in the ground and waited for a bit until we decided to get going. We all got up and headed outside.

I hadn't noticed before but Ben was holding my hand. It was nice to have Ben there with me because I knew I could rely on him when Calem and I were in trouble.

Then we all abruptly came to a stop as a strange noise filled my ears that a couldn't clearly make out.

Then I realized it was a dog barking. It was quickly followed by a gunshot.
