Ben ran towards Calem and lifted him up, then motioned for me to follow him. There were more gunshots and barks coming from somewhere nearby and Ben started heading in that direction.
"What's happening?" I yelled over all the noise. There was no point in whispering anymore because the gunshots would have already attracted most of the zombies. Something was wrong. Very wrong.
"Ned and Max must be in trouble." Said Ben, who was breathing as fast as my heart was going. "The barking must be from Coco."
My feet thundered along the pavement as we headed towards the noises, which were getting louder and louder. Calem was bouncing in Ben's arms, holding his lucky iron bar, reading to hit anything that so much as moved. By the speed Ben and I were going I was glad he was being held.
Ben suddenly stopped and hoisted his crowbar, ready to strike. I pulled out a deadly looking hammer and gripped it so tightly, my knuckles turned a ghostly white. I knew this was going to be a blood bath so I had to be ready.
Ben gestured for me to come forward, then placed Calem down behind him. The noises were so loud now I had to fight the urge to cover my ears. It was definitely Brian and Max. I could hear them screaming to each other to stay out of the zombies reach.
Ben quickly charged around the corner, followed by Calem, then me. We were about to walk into hell.
They were everywhere. Thirty or so zombies were surrounding Ned and Max, who looked hurt on about 90% of their bodies.
Ned had this huge shotgun which had taken out about a third of the zombies. Max however, was on the ground, shooting whatever came near.
I charged into battle with Ben by my side, swinging the hammer with such ferocity, I nearly ripped my arm out of its socket. It collided with one of the undead which dropped to the floor instantly.
I hadn't noticed before but Coco was trying to lead some of the zombies away from us so we could exterminate them. It was working perfectly and Ned took them all down while I got rid of a few more zombies. Coco was amazing. If she wasn't there I think we'd all be dead by now.
I focused on the task before me and swung my hammer through a some more unlucky skulls then went to stand near Calem. He was doing just fine without the help of anyone. He'd became a completely different person in a couple of days and I knew he had what it took to survive.
I released a breath I hadn't realized I'd been holding as the last zombie hit the floor. We all raced over to Ned and Max, who seemed as out of breath as we were. We all rested for two seconds before I said something.
"We should get going. More will be on there way if we don't book it." Ben nodded, then all of a sudden, his face dropped. I followed his gaze which was fixed on Max, who was moaning in pain. My eyes flickered to his leg. Something was definitely wrong.
There was blood dribbling down his calf, which looked hurt. Badly. I crouched down to get a better look, then quickly jumped back.
It was a bite mark.
