We eventually stopped on the side of the road to fill our stomachs.
Laura cracked open some baked beans which we had on some bread. I had to wake Calem up to have something to eat. He'd been up all night and crashed out as soon as we jumped in the cars.I was so proud of him. He'd grown so much in only a couple of days. He was like a brother to me and I was glad nothing had happened to him.
Once we'd finished our food we packed everything up. Adam said we should get some rest if we needed it and that we wouldn't drive until night came.
I grabbed Calem's hand and pulled him up onto the car's roof. "Remember when we had to climb over all those cars to get to the other side of the road?" Said Calem. "Yeah." I replied. "That was actually fun."
Calem leaned against me and I wrapped my arm around his shoulders.
"What you guys doing?" Ben had hoisted himself on top of the car and gave me a kiss on the cheek.
"Hey, were are the others?" I asked him as I kissed him back. "They're all asleep, it's just us." Then he kissed me again.
"Eww!" Said Calem, "Can you guys get a room? Or a car?" I laughed and ruffled his sandy hair. I loved Calem and Ben so much and I knew that they loved me back. I was so close to everyone I'd met these past couple of days.
My watch read 6:48. The sun would be setting soon and we would have to keep driving.
I sat in silence with Calem and Ben for a bit. I thought about the past and how much danger I'd been in but I stilled pulled through. We had all been through so much together and that was all that mattered.
The sun was getting closer to the horizon and the sky was filled with yellow, pink, blue and orange. I remembered the sunset that Calem and I watched from the rooftop.
How nice it was. How nice this sunset would be.
I yelled out to everyone to come out of the cars and watch the sunset. They all rubbed their eyes and climbed out of the cars. Some of them sat on the roof of the cars, others just leaned against the front but they all gazed at the sky.
These people were my family.
They excepted Calem and I when it mattered most and I could never thank them enough. I loved every single one of them and that would never change.
As the sun dipped below the horizon I thought about the world. How messed up it had become but I still found people who loved me.
How could something so beautiful end up in a world so ugly.
