Willa stepped out of the balcony
quietly put on some shoes, she needed to talk to Philby. She wasn't even sure if he was still awake, but she needed to tell him how she really felt. She headed for the door, she opened it only to see Philby in front of it posed to knock. He looked as surprised to see her as she was to see him.
"Philby!" She whispered.
"I was coming to talk to you," He explained. "Here, come with me. We need to talk."
She nodded and hesitantly followed as he led her downstairs and outside by the pool. They sat down by the edge. Philby turned and began to talk.
"Look Willa, I...I haven't- well..." He struggled.
"Wait, Philby stop." He looked up surprised.
"I have something I have to say, and it's okay of you don't agree, or don't want to hear it because you've moved on. I know that you have a girlfriend or at least you're seeing someone else, but I need to say this- I was wrong, three months ago when we broke up, I was scared and afraid that if we kept going we would drift apart and so I thought that by breaking it off purposely I would somehow feel better, but it made it worse. I thought that all we did was fight, but I let my stupid cynicism cloud over every good thing we've ever had. I was so wrong, and I never stopped loving you." She rambled.
Tears were forming again and she knew she had tossed a ton of words at him, but it was now or never. She looked up, he was looking at her, face unreadable.
"Willa...first of all, I don't have a girlfriend." He said slowly.
"You don't?" She asked momentarily confused. "Then who was in the picture on Instagram?"
"That was a girl I went on a few dates with, but...I felt nothing beyond mere attraction. We haven't talked in weeks."
"Oh" Willa mouthed.
"Honestly...I was angry, when you broke up with me, but I knew you were right. We fight. We get irrationally angry with each other, and making that kind of relationship work long distance is logically flawed." He stated.
Willa nodded, trying to blink back the tears, what did she expect, that he would fall at her feet saying he was dying of love when she had hurt him?
"But, as I moved on, I tried to push thoughts of you, of us, away, and I dated and threw myself into school and work. As I did that, I knew that's all I was doing. Pushing away the thoughts, because they weren't going to leave, because Willa, I still love you." Philby admitted.
"Really?" She asked quietly. He nodded. "Dell...I'm so sorry, I'm sorry that I gave up on us. It was the stupidest thing I've ever done. Is there still a chance for us?"
"Willa..." He leaned over, pulled her close, placing his hand at the back of her head and kissed her, long, slow and sweet. They broke apart foreheads resting on each others. Willa smiled.
"Does that answer your question?" Philby asked, smiling.
"I think so" Willa smiled, resting her head on his shoulder.
True love did exsist. It wasn't easy, it drove her crazy, hurt her and defied every logical bone in her body. True love went far beyond the butterflies and breathlessness of kisses. It went deeper than rush of initial attraction. True love was what she felt for Philby. They would never be a perfect couple they would always face problems and fight over stupid, petty things, but she would rather face everyday with him, whether they were desperately in love, or at each others throats, than spend one more hour without him in her life. Distance mattered, but true love came from the heart, that was something that distance couldn't take away.
