------------------------------------------
"Hey girl," Joshua wiggled his eyebrows. I rolled my eyes. Another boy. Urgh. I retorted,"Look, I can tell that you think you're just so cool and amazing. But I know better. I know that guys like you just want sex and I'm not giving it to you. Ok? The end. End of discussion."
On that happy note, I spun around flinging my hair in his direction and stalked off sassily. The ends of my mouth quirked up just before my face was blocked from their view. I caught a wink from Ben and a mischievous smile. I was tempted to whip out my phone and snap a picture of Josh's expression. It was priceless.
The rest of the night was amazing. I danced like there was no tomorrow with Ben, obviously after he promised on his life that he would not try to get me to have sex with him or forcefully kiss me. After that, I found out more about him. His mop of blonde hair contradicted his innocent face. He kind of reminded me of a cute puppy which gave me the unreasonable urge to just swing him around and kiss him on the cheek.
We were dancing to one of my favourite songs; On the Floor by Jennifer Lopez. Ben was trying (and failing) to rap with pitbull while I busted out the dance moves on the shining floor. At that happy moment, a ludring resounded through the house. Everything stopped. Silence. Josh's voice came from somewhere as he picked up the house phone.
"Hey Mom, what' up?" Josh replied nervously. His mother said something into the phone. Josh's mouth gaped open. "Oh... Ok... See you later," Josh's voice trembled. He placed the phone down, his face ashen and pale. "My parents are coming back in ten minutes," he whispered. Silence again. As realization dawned on everyone, he shouted,"My parents are coming back in ten minutes! Everybody out! This party's over!" He and his friends quickly ushered everybody out. Ben grabbed my hand and we plunged through the surging crowd, who was mumbling in confusion and puzzlement, to Josh and his friends. Josh was arguing with his friends, trying to decide who to clean up which part of the house. When he caught sight of Ben and me, he sighed,"Ben, come help me. As my best friend you should help me the most. As for you girl, get outta' here. I haven't got time for teasing." I glared at him,"The name's Vivian Ross. And as for getting out of here, that's not gonna' happen. Looking at your house, in its terrible state, it could use the touch of a girl." He groaned,"Fine! You're in charge now." Everyone looked at me. I cleared my throat, then realised that I could not afford for the guys to see any spot of doubt or weakness in me. Or they would not listen to my leadership. I shouted,"Ok, if we're going to get this house clean in five minutes, you're all going to have to do your part." I pointed to a tanned guy with an afro and a pale guy with dark hair,"You and you, I don't know your names and I don't care, go clean up the right wing of the second floor." I gestured to another two dudes,"You two are going to clean the left wing of the second floor." Directing Josh, Ben and two of his other friends," Go clean the third floor." I ordered the remaining five guys to help clean the first floor and the porch. "And what about you, princess, are you gonna' just sit around and watch?" The afro guy sneered sarcastically. I shook my head. "I am in charge of all the toilets," I replied grimly.
On that thought, we grabbed the brooms and dustpans, cloths and detergent, and set to work on Josh's messed up house. Apparently Josh's mother could be terrifying if she wanted to, and would have their heads if she found out that her house was in such a mess, as would Josh's father, although he would be kinder. We rushed downstairs just as we caught sight of the shining headlights of a car driving up the porch.
"Crap, they're back," Josh hissed under his breath. He stared frantically at me. His parent had never met me before. They would freak and there was no more time to get me out of the house. He shouted in a hushed whisper,"Everyone, lounge around and act normal." He pointed at me,"You are Ben's girlfriend, ok?" I ignored him purposely. We dashed to the couches. I flipped open a book that I had brought. A Tale of Two Cities. Classics were my favourite.
"Click," A key was slotted into the keyhole and twisted. The house was eerily quiet. Only our short and nervous breaths could be heard in the silence of the dark night. The heavy oak door opened up, revealing a petite but firm-looking lady, and a tall man with flaming red hair.
"Mum! Dad! So glad you're back!" Josh grasped his parents in an embrace. There was no evidence that five minutes ago, the house had been in a mess. His parents smiled and shook hands with Josh's friends. Their eyes came to land on me. A look of astonishment crossed their faces. I looked down on the floor shyly.
"Oh... Josh, who is this lovely lady?" His mother inquired kindly. I stuttered, "I am Vivian Hastantair, a friend of Ben. We met on the streets when I crashed into him by accident." Josh's father's eyebrows shot up,"Vivian Hastantair ? As in Milvobo Hastantair's daughter, mothered my Coral Woods?" I inclined my head with a nod. Josh and Ben were looking at me in shock. "In fact, that would be him right now," I stated as my phone rang. "Vivian, come to the hospital. It's urgent." Dad's voice said through the phone and he then hung up.
I thanked Josh's parents for having me over and that their house was one of the most amazing I had ever seen. Josh ran his fingers through his black hair as he awkwardly shook my hand goodbye. I hugged Ben and he slipped a piece of paper into my hand. "Call me," he had breathed into my ear. I smiled a little bit and thanked Josh's parents again. I turned and stepped out the door into the cold air. I pulled a leather jacket from my car around me and drove off into the night.
To the hospital.
To my mother.
