I walked up the marble staircase, chatting with Dad. He said that there was still no change in Mom, but at least she was still alive. I told Dad about the troubles at school. The teasing and Bryce, the irritating hottie. He suggested,"Why don't you stop trying to hide yourself. I'm sure you will look beautiful, Vivian?" I sighed and replied,"Dad, we've already been through this. You know my reasons, and I hate attention." He nodded and said,"It's ok, I respect your decisions." I smiled as we continued chatting. Dad wanted me to report the bullying to a teacher but I knew that that would just make me seem even more like a nerd.
Then, Dad asked,"Is there gonna be any special events in school?" I stiffened and replied, "Yah, prom." He stopped in his tracks and put an arm around me,"Hey, it's fine. You can just wear anything like you usually do." I relaxed and grinned,"Yah. Forget about it, I'll just worry about about it closer to when the time comes." After that, we left the 'Prom Drawer' locked away and untouched. Dad said that he had to leave for another business trip tomorrow and I pretended to pout. He laughed just as we climbed onto the penthouse landing. The penthouse was entirely made of glass and was filled with beautiful plants. It was sort of like a really nice greenhouse park. There were swings and slides which I would play with alone, or I would sit down on the oak wood bench and listen to music while doing my homework. The glass panels that made up the walls and domed ceiling were panelled with silver. Tiny lights lined the silver, illuminating the penthouse at night. I loved my home, it was utterly beautiful.
We continued chatting as the sun went down. Before we knew it, it was tea time. We sauntered into a small glass dome in the very centre of the penthouse. Inside was a beautiful white table with two beige coloured stairs at each side. A plasma screen television was framed at the back of the inside of the dome. A small cupboard was set at a side, filled with tea bags, ingredients for food and a water boiler. A small stove was placed beside the cupboard.
I made 2 cups of chamomile tea and passed one cup to Dad. Then, I warmed up two cupcakes that I had already baked this morning. After that, we sat down and munched on our cupcakes while chatting. "These are really good, Vivian!" Dad exclaimed. I blushed and muttered a word of thanks.
After a long time of chatting, we finally got to a topic that I frequently avoided. "So, Vivian, while I was away, have you found any, special, you know, guys or anything?" Dad mumbled. I blushed and turned my head, muttering,"No..." Dad put an arm around me and reassured me,"Don't worry, I'm sure that one day you will find the right guy." I nodded and we dropped the topic. I asked,"Dad, how long will your trip be?" Dad turned sad and replied,"A month." I leaned back on the chair and tried to blink back my tears. A month before I could see Dad again. Dad smiled sadly and grasped me into a hug, then looked at his watch. "We'd better go get some dinner, it's 6pm already." Dad suggested. I nodded and we trudged down the stairs to get some dinner. I started to cook the dinner while Dad started on any work he had.
After I had finished preparing dinner, I pulled the string near the kitchen fridge while I placed the cutlery. A bell sounded and Dad walked down the stairs for dinner. Just as Dad entered the dining room, I finished arranging the cutlery and we sat down. Dad muttered through his food,"This is delicious, Vivian! Where did you learn to cook like that?" I blushed and replied,"School." "He sighed and pleaded,"I really think you shouldn't hide yourself, Vivian." I pondered,"Maybe I'll think about it." He looked surprised, probably hadn't expected me to give in so easily. I laughed and revealed,"I'm tired of hiding, I really don't care anymore. I'll be myself on prom night!" I decided happily. My father smiled warmly and gave me a hug, before going back up stairs. I walked up to the left wing which was my side of the house. I undressed and stepped into the shower. The hot water got rid of all my troubles and I dressed in a nightgown, then crashed on the bed."Ring!!!!!!" A sharp sound cut through my dreams. I jolted awake and slammed my clock off. "Uh.." I mumbled then stopped in my tracks. I rushed downstairs, but the house was empty. There was a note on the dining table. It said;
Dear Vivian,
I have already left for my business trip. You were still asleep and I didn't want to wake you up. Remember about prom night and go buy your dress from DeLaLindleFawkes. Use your credit card. You'll see that it has been topped up with a lot of money. 😜
Love,
DadI blinked the tears out of my eyes and rushed into the bathroom. I dressed in a shirt and shorts before peeking a sneak at the mirror. I gasped in horror; there were small visible specks of auburn and orange streaks. I picked up my blonde hair dye and carefully dyed my hair. After feeling satisfied with my work, I stuffed my purse into a sling bag and took a cab to DeLaLindleFawkes. It was the most expensive and beautiful dress store in town. The shop owner seemed to know just what would look best on you.
I stepped inside and the bell rang. I sucked in my breath and stared at the amazing interior of the shop.
