Chapter 41

*Nathan’s POV*

It was 4am. Ashley and Tom had gone home. I stayed at the hospital with Kerry waiting for her parents to arrive. I was worried if Kerry’s dad was going to turn up. “Nathan?” I heard a lady say. I turn around and it was Kerry’s mum. She looked at Kerry who still had the tube down her throat and was still in the same state as she was before. Her mum started to cry. Without even thinking about it I stood up and went over to comfort her. “What happened to her?” she asked in sobs “she got a bit carried away at the party. She climbed up onto the roof and slipped. I tried to get her down Mrs Thorpe I honestly did but. She was drunk and was not listening” I told her honestly. “So what is wrong with her?” she asked me again as she sat down in the seat I was in and took Kerry’s hand “the Doctor said she does have severe alcohol poisoning. They also took her off to do an x-ray not that long ago. She has broken her wrist” I explained to her. I took a seat in the chair opposite the bed and let Mrs Thorpe have some time to herself with Kerry. “You know Nathan, Kerry is so grateful to have a boyfriend like you” she told me. “Thanks, but if I took more care of her at the party then this would never happened. It is my fault Mrs Thorpe and your husband is going to be extremely angry with me.” I told her. She shook her head “no he won’t. I have had enough of his childish behaviour. I mean he has no respect for you young and talented kids at all and quite frankly if he lays one finger on any one of you me and him are over and I will not let him touch you ok?” she told me. Then our conversation was stopped by an awful sound. Coughing and spluttering. Kerry gasping for breath. “NURSE!” Mrs Thorpe shouted as two nurses and Doctor Schmidt ran in……..

*Kerry’s POV*

The pain was unbearable! It felt like there was a cork in my windpipe and I couldn’t breathe properly. All I could do was cough and gag. There was something definitely down my throat and it was not a nice feeling. I couldn’t really recall where I was. I was just concentrating on trying to breathe again. I could then feel it. A horrible stinging sensation down the back of my throat, tickling me as it moved up. It was making me gag and I just wanted to be sick. As whatever it was left my mouth I took a massive breath in and out. I panted a bit before saying in a croaky whisper “Nathan?” I was panting heavily and crying. “I am here baby girl. Its ok sweetie I am here” I heard him say. I still couldn’t really register where I was. I felt people do stuff to me. I felt violated and began to cry. I was confused and I didn’t understand what was going on.

*Nathan’s POV*

“What is the matter with her? She is awake now. Why is she cry and why is she flinching to every touch?” Mrs Thorpe asks as I gently try and calm Kerry down who was in a state. “It’s ok. We had to give her some morphine so when we removed the tube so it wouldn’t have hurt her as much. It is very natural reaction to morphine. Also be aware that she has had serious alcohol poisoning so she may be awake but the alcohol may not have left her system as of yet. One of my nurses will be down shorty to give Kerry a blood test so we can clarify that. She is stable now so I will let you two try and speak to her ok?” the doctor explained to us “thank you. Thanks you so much” I told her as she left the room. “Nathan. Where. Am. I?” I heard Kerry try and say. I turn my attention to her. I take her hand “it’s ok, you are at the hospital. You had an accident last night at the party. Do you remember?” I asked her. She started to cry when I said hospital but she shook he head. “Mum. Dad gunna kill me” she sobbed. “Sweetie I will not let him touch you. I am not angry at you, just disappointed that’s all but as long as you are ok” Mrs Thorpe told her as she went up to her and kissed Kerry’s forehead. “I. Can’t remember what I did but what ever done.. I am so sorry” Kerry said in a drowsy way. The morphine was making her sleepy. I kissed her hand and told her “it’s ok. I still love you baby”. Then the door open and Nurse Scott Robson walked into the room. Kerry looked up in a confused way as the nurse had a tray in his hand which was covered. “hello, I just got to do  blood test on Kerry for Doctor Schmidt so we can test to see how much alcohol is still in her system”  he said “I will need to get to her. I am going to say, if you don’t mind Nathan, going round the other side of her” he instructed me. I nodded and got up “Nathan don’t go” I heard Kerry desperately plea. “I am still here Kerry. Next to your mum now okay?” I told her as she gently sobbed trying to reach out for me. “Kerry keep your arm down. It needs to heal.” Nurse Robson said as he gently put her arm back down on the bed. “Nathan come in front of me. It is you she really wants to see. I will just be outside making a phone call to Kerry’s dad” Mrs Thorpe said. She kissed Kerry on the forehead smiled then left the room. The nurse was preparing the things he needed for the blood test and Kerry was getting panicky. Her breathing had quickened and the tears started to trickle down her cheek. I hated seeing her in this way. I was heartbroken. Scott took hold of Kerry’s arm and started to swab the middle of elbow with a sterile wipe. He then wrapped a tourniquet around her arm to bring up the veins. She started to whimper. “Nathan.. Make it stop” she told me. I felt helpless. She needed to have this blood test done. “Ok Kerry I am going to do it now. You will feel a slight scratch ok?” Scott said holding Kerry’s arm. She tried to pull away but she was too weak to do so. She started to cry heavily. I crouched down to her level. She was staring right at the needle which is what was scaring her. I placed two fingers under her chin and turned her head towards me and collided my lips with hers. It was the best distraction as despite the fact she slightly whimpered and slightly flinched when the nurse inserted the needle she didn’t pull away. “Done” Scott said as he took off the tourniquet and gently stopped the blood flow with a piece of cotton wool. We pulled away from the kiss and Kerry smiled at me. Her whimpers and crying had stopped but she did look tired. “Get some rest darling. I will see you when you wake up” I told her as Kerry softly and quickly fell into a deep sleep. Scott left the room with the blood sample. “Come on Nathan. You can come home with me and sleep overnight round ours. We will come back up to the hospital tomorrow and I am sure your parents will understand” Mrs Thorpe said. I didn’t realise she had walked back into the room “Thanks Mrs Thorpe-“ I started. “please, call me Annie” she said “ok, Annie. Umm thanks, I would appreciate it. Are you sure your husband won’t mind?” I asked her “if he has a problem with it, he can sleep somewhere else” Annie said. I gently kissed Kerry on the head before leaving with Annie back to their house.
